Before she died, my mother gave me a copy of our family tree back to the 17th century, which she had spent years compiling. One day, as I was tidying my desk out, I accidentally shredded it. My sisters, who had never been interested in such things, had long since thrown theirs out. Might your mother have given a copy to a niece/nephew or cousin etc. Such a shame to have shredded your copy albeit by accident. Since I started doing FH I've found hundreds of distant relatives and exchanged copies of family trees we've been working on separately with a few others who have been doing the same.

Good advice about the societies, LP, I belong to several in the area where most of my ancestors were, but they're a long way away, no chance of getting to meetings there but there's a lot of info which can be exchanged locally too

Go to the local FHS meetings. It's amazing the really helpful people you can find at such.
There are good odds that somebody there, may have been looking for relatives, in one of the same distant areas, as you are.

At last, fellow family historians. I've been researching mine since the nineties. As my history is in Wales, and I live in Somerset, the local FHS societies are out of the question. Though I am a member of Ancestry .co.uk, an excellent site. I even found a cousin who lives in Shorpe, and we e mail regularly.

I didn't get any help from the local family history society, but I joined the Devon one as I think I said in a previous post.

I got into genealogy because I have always wanted to know who my paternal grandfather was and where he came from. He deserted my grandmother around the time my dad was born and his name could never be mentioned to either of them. I managed to trace him through Ancestry.com and found that he was an American who went back there and eventually disappeared again. I have traced his family in America back to the mid 1700s though when they were some of the earliest German settlers to arrive there. It took me many years and many false trails to get that information and, along the way, I have learned a lot about other branches of my family too. As has been said, it is addictive but, unfortunately, I think I have gone about as far as is possible now. If anyone would like help with tracing their family tree I would be glad to help.

I did mine about 10 years ago and also went back as far as I could without spending a fortune.
