It's getting rave reviews and I had to book tickets for this week. My son likes Nolan so we are going to see it.

“Hidden Figures” about the black female mathematicians who worked on the NASA programme in the 60s. It’s not a great picture but it’s very well made and acted and fortunately doesn’t sentimentalise the subject, more or less tells a straightforward story. I have to say that I was squirming uncomfortably and with a certain shame to see how blacks were treated in those days but it is an interesting story about a subject of which I knew nothing and it deserves to be told. I’m glad that the characters depicted were eventually recognised for their work. Overall it is a feel good movie greatly helped by the fact that it is impossible not to like the three central characters.
I have read that as far as box office figures are concerned, “Hidden Figures” has had a greater income at the box office than “La La Land”.
In my opinion,deservedly so.

Well I thought Dunkirk was very good. The scope of it was excellent, the sweeping vistas amazing, the moments of silence were profound and I found the music completely fitting for the drama. Excellent all round for me.

.....films update.....
Valerian and the City of blah blah blah - fantasy adventure gone crazy, loved every minute of it, Cara is the star.
Atomic Blonde - the new Bourne/Wonder Woman, not kidding.
The Hitman's Bodyguard - comedy action farce, with a potty mouth.... surprisingly, very good.

This week, I saw "Murder on The Orient Express"
Directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh. It's well photographed and scripted, but sadly for me, Branagh put too much emphasis on the character of his detective, who he also plays. I've seen all the various versions of this film over the years, and think that none of them go near to just reading the book. There are some good performances from the many famous actors involved, in this version, especially Michelle Pfieffer in the role made her own previously by Lauren Bacall. But something was lacking about the film as a whole.

The trailer looked awful, and I think I would struggle to get past the facial hair. Kingsman: The Golden Circle was very entertaining, though I was annoyed about them {Spoiler}killing Roxy and Merlin . I'm not the world's greatest fan of Elton John, but he was a hoot in this. Channing Tatum was a classic example of using a big name to pull in the punters, given that his was actually a faily small role. Next up is Paddington 2 and then The Last Jedi, starring the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Henry of Wales...

I found the first scene set in Jerusalem ridiculous. So all that crowd of natives was supposed to be awed by Poirot and naturally they all spoke English. In spite of the "all star cast" almost nobody had much dialogue and their time on screen was more or less wasted.. Thank heavens that Johnny Depp who I can't stand, was the murder victim and had very little more to play in the film. The scenery was lovely. Definitely don't recommend the film.

Forgot to say, that in "Murder on the Orient Express" K. Branagh wears an almost unbelievable moustache (yes, I know that Poirot is supposed to be inordinately proud of his, so he has to have one) - this is huge, and all through the film, reminded me totally of the one worn by Stephen Fry in the final part of the TV series Blackadder, as the Colonel. I expected him to make that strange bleating noise any minute!!

Went to see "Paddington 2" recently. Can recommend it as fun for all ages - there are one or two adult jokes in there, and lots of moments for all to laugh out loud. Well acted by Hugh Bonneville as Mr Brown, with a good supporting cast including Hugh Grant as a washed out actor, turning out to be a real pantomime villain. It's totally charming, really hilarious, and it's not necessary to have seen the first Paddington film to enjoy it.
A ten out of ten from me!! Wonderful stuff!

I’d love to see it but I think I’ll wait until it comes on Sky.

La La Land - 0/10 About as far from a classic 50's musical as you can get - don't believe the hype, it's awful. Ohh, what's so bad? I havent seen it myself but have only read good reviews and it looks like getting a lot of Oscar nods. I tried watching it on Netflix (twice). Now stalled......Glad I didn't pay to see it at cinema. is it Marmite? I don't get it. Like the 2 leads......don't like 'em in this.

As mentioned in the Green Room, I finally got around to Paddington 2. A very funny film. Hugh Grant seems to be having great fun. I didn't recognise Eileen Atkins(!) but therewere plenty of other 'names' in minor roles. A pity Peter Capaldi's Mr Curry had a much reduced role. It must have given the writers much pleasure putting in that line about actors being evil!

Saw "The Greatest Showman" this week, about the famous Barnum, of Barnum's Circus fame. It's a musical, the same as the stage show Barnum.
Not the best film I've seen of late - very crisp song and dance sequences, but a saccharine sweet storyline, with the fact that Barnum exploited both his human and animal performers, glossed over. Good performances from the main characters including great singing from Hugh Jackman.

Went to see Darkest Hour, very good. Cinematography excellent, dark and claustrophobic where it needed to be, Halifax gets a bit of a drubbing which is probably unfair but overall very good. No action scenes so don't expect them.

Went to see The Post yesterday, I thought it was very well done. Quite wordy of course, lots of discussions about whether they should publish, but the sense of excitement, risk etc comes over well even though we know what happened.
Meryl Streep not one of my favourite actresses and I don't know whether her portrayal of Kay Graham is a good one, but she and Tom Hanks present believable characters
