I was very disappointed by Baby Jennifer. I thought she would be a red lizard, or at the very least have cloven hooves. I did not follow all that stuff when her mother was on the Ouija board swirling this marbles around. Also, I wondered how Paretta (is that her Christian name?) managed to shoot Karellan as I assumed he would have some kind of force field to protect him, being the top dog in the whole world, nay universe. And how convenient that the miracle medicine to cure Barbie's cancer is equally effective on gunshot wounds! I am saving up a read of the full synopsis of this book until afterwards. But I did spot that our hero is NOT a Missouri farmer but the Secretary General of the UN. I've not seen all part 2 but there are an awful lot of differences. The book is good.
I shall keep watching though.

I also have no idea what was going on with the marbly swirly thing. Karellan was talking to the baby about .... something. I was also hoping the baby would have cute little hoofie - woofies but no.
I really really hope the book isn't like this cos ACC is one of my favourite authors.

You have to remember it was written in the fifties but it is a good central idea and well written.
After a promising start (for a TV adaptation) this is now wandering so far off on its own course as to be heading for disaster!
Hope part 3 pulls it back.

It is actually one I haven't got around to yet. I do cut ACC and other authors of his age some slack on the characterisation of women. But the adaptation is set now so I'm afraid the director should have known better. Quite a few of the male characters could have been played by women with no change in the actual character. And the lack of racial diversity in what is supposed to be modern times is very noticeable.
Plus the science makes absolutely no sense. Which is unforgiveable in a ACC adaptation because he was always careful to make the science credible within the limitations of what was known then.

I don't know why they bothered! If Karellen just wanted the children to join the cosmic consciousness (and I had to wiki the plot to get that!), then he could have done it yonks before couldn't he? Why set up all that Utopia malarkey? And they didn't make a big enough difference between the boredom of Utopia vs creativity. I know it was referenced in NA but it should have been a theme earlier, IMO.
My problem was that it was all too small. Ricky and Ellie, Milo and Rachel, the Gregsons were basically it. I think it needed the political side too, some news flashes etc. And had I been a Gregson, I think I would have been quite happy to say cheerio to Jennifer!

She was creepy, wasn't she?
I think I will have to read the book to get the point. I agree with you, none of it made any sense.

Mankind as such was becoming extinct and the children developing into a new life form. The Overlords were their to nurse and protect them, and to some extent help mankind accept their lot. It is a long time since I read the book and have no doubt forgotten much, but it was not about individuals. Ricki is a much older man who dies many years before the Overlords reveal themselves in the book. He is not in the second half. As far as I recall by the time the children are evolving all religions have disappeared. Why someone can't do a straight adaptation of the book I will never understand! Please someone! Even on radio, usually more reliable, they completely cut the first part - no Ricki at all - and concentrated from where the children are developing onwards. I just ask anyone who likes SF but did not like this to give the book a try. I must re-read it

I'll give it a go. As I said before, I do like ACC a lot so I believe you that the book is a lot better.

Blue Bloods.
I saw a trailer for this on Pick last night. It starts on Monday 4 September at 10.00.
Freeview premiere of the US police series starring Tom Selleck. I think it has been running for quite a while on Sky. I shall give it a whirl but it may be a bit too faux Irish for me. IIRC the officers are family members so that may get in the way of the police aspect.

I've been watching this and I like it. But I'm a bit surprised it's written by the same people that wrote The Sopranos. It's nowhere near that standard.

Haven
This starts on Pick on Monday 30 October at 8.00.
"Like the X Files with a homespun twist" according to the paper. FBI agent Audrey Parker arrives to investigate weird goings-on in the small town of Haven.
I shall try this but am a bit fed up with Pick who suddenly stopped showing the fantastic Stalker before the end of the series. And there was only one series to get through!
