I heard a news item yesterday about wheelchair tennis losing its lottery funding. That seems just daft, given how well our players have done. A few individuals will be supported till the 2020 Olympics, but only those at the very top. What a shame. nocomment

She's doing well isn't she.
Davis cup is in Rouen, France. Our line up is Dan Evans, Jamie Murray, Kyle Edmund and Dominic Inglot

Ahh, thanks, Sooty. I knew Andy probably wasn't playing. We might have our work cut out as France has a lot of highish ranked players to choose from. None of them can quite keep up with Andy, but with him out of the picture, I imagine they are favourites to take the tie.

What a shame. nocomment If the LTA stopped hiding behind their charity, and actually stuck their hands into their very deep pockets, then UK Sport might have taken a different approach.

Maybe! I appreciate funding is complicated behind the scenes. It does seem a shame though, to "reward" success by removing it. Getting to the top of your chosen sport requires such a lot of personal expenditure (in terms of effort, life-style adaptions, etc, not to mention actual money). It is discouraging to get there and then find it doesn't seem valued by boards and institutions.

I fing that funding cut of the wheelchair Olympics very sad. Well done to Jo for reaching the final.

Yes, what a fab win to have under her belt. Up to No.7 in the world now, and nudging towards a top 5 slot. Not sure when we last had a GB female player reach such dizzy heights, but it certainly hasn't been achieved recently.

In terms of official rankings (after 1973): Sue Barker reached number 3 (1977) in singles, Jo Durie reached number 5 (1984) in singles and number 9 (1983) in doubles. Virginia Wade reached number 2 (1975) in singles and number 1 (1973) in doubles. It should be nonted that Angela Mortimer was ranked number 1 in 1961 under an old unofficial ranking done by Lance Tingay, which was seen as the "one that counted". www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/heritage-1973-atp-rankings-celebration-part-i

Thanks, Mike. Quite a long time has elapsed then. Are we all ready for a w'end of Davis Cup then? I suspect we will be two rubbers down by the end of the day, so Jamie and Dom Inglot will need to be on good doubles form tomorrow. A 3-0 defeat would be a bit embarrassing.

Oops ... 2 down, and not a set won by us yet. And that is despite the French team being without Tsonga, Monfils, Gilles Simon or Gasquet.
