I think that's a waxwing WaxwingThey are arriving here now for the winter. They love rowan berries. And there's a lot of rowan by me so I'm hoping to see a few. Thank you Miranda!

You might be able to do a reverse search for it if you can drag the image over to Google's image search.

Yes, a Waxwing. So called because of the tiny bit of red on the wing, which seems strange. They look for anything with lots of berries on it, then strip the tree.

Thank you Delia I googled and see waxwings are indigenous to my state, maybe I always mistook them for female cardinals. They do look quite similar. The cardinal is my state bird, though it is much easier to identify the males because they are brilliant red all over and the females yellowish or gray with red and black colored wing tips and tail feathers.

Ah, yes, I've seen pictures of the bright red cardinals, but didn't realise that the females were so dull in comparison. I did wonder about the waxwings being related to them, because they have the same dramatic headgear!
Waxwings come to the UK from further north, looking for food when there's none left in Scandinavia, I think.

Just started the Christmas puzzle - a family tradition. Set up on floors, boards, on and under tables and even behind sofas in our family houses we all had one going that had to be finished by 6h Jan. The puzzle serves as a focus for people who cannot cope within a noisy social group or as an icebreaker if you get pulled in by everyone having a go. It was on such a floor that I first heard and enjoyed racy adult banter when, by my keeping quiet, they forgot I was there.
Now I shall have to do most of it myself. The picture is crass sentimental Christmas stuff as ever and already I swear there are about 30 edge pieces missing- I mean really, what?
