So Laura managed to do in one day what the Scottish police couldn't manage at all...and find out how Andrew'a wife died, and another rape. I will be glad to see the end of this drama.

Just watched the final episode, we thought it was a bit of a cop out, very rushed as if the writers suddenly realised they only had ten minutes to the end. I suppose it’s possible things have been left open for another series.

Viewers: "Gosh, how will this devious man ever be unmasked? By what clever plot twist will he slip up or be tricked?"
Writers: "Oh, he just amasses a pile of damning evidence and hides it. Any time we want to end the story we get someone to find it."
Viewers (disappointedly): Oh, what a cop out. You'll be writing a story backwards next!".

Well even if it was a bit of a cop out I was so tense during the search scene I had to FF to the next bit to ensure he didn't turn up at the shed! Then I RW and watched it.

It was amazing how she managed to find evidence that the police weren’t aware of and just walk off with it so easily. Hadn’t the police checked his phone? Didn’t they know he had a mother with a house? What were they doing all that time?

So agree with the last four posts - what a poor ending. So, there is going to be another series but, even so, there were way too many loose ends left hanging and too many gaps in the story. I'm left wondering why I bothered to stick with it and don't think I'll bother when it comes on again. Very poor stuff.

The RT warned that the ending would not be what viewers expect or deserve. For me though the disappointment had already set in half way through - when it changed from being unclear what the truth was, to just being how to trap the known villain.
Series 2 they say will be about the investigation into what we saw in the final scene. We were shown a number of suspects in the closing moments - Tom, Vanessa's military girlfriend/partner Jennifer, son Luke and Katy. Or how about Vanessa's colleague DS Maxwell? - who kept Laura waiting at the station for ages saying he had been off duty, all of which time Vanessa herself was also uncontactable...

Series 2??!! Why the obsession with continuing these things? Finish it off properly is my vote. Of course I would have a different vote for The Night Manager.....😍

It did say at the end "Liar will be back". They needn't bother for me.

I like your theory about the Detective Sgt,geometryman. Not a great ending, but I enjoyed it, as I've enjoyed seeing Ioan Gruffudd on our tv again.I used to watch him when he was very young in a Welsh soap called 'Pobl y Cwm'

I must be the only one who enjoyed this ending. My money is on Jennifer for Andrew's dispatch. I do think if there is another series (and it sounds like there will be) Laura should be taken on as a detective. Let's face it, she did all the leg work and solved the crime

As with all dramas ,you have to suspend belief, of course things like this are not as cut and dried in real life. The undercover detective was not very convincing and fell at the first hurdle, though l can't actually believe the police would set up a sting like this anyway.
I would like a new series ,but with a twist so it it is a woman crying serial rape, and gets found out as the liar.
That would reflect an actual real case.

Yes, I agree. It was an intriguing moral dilemma of who to believe when there is no proof, and became an increasingly unbelievable story of how to catch the villain, whose personality and behaviour became more and more unlikely. (When would he have found the time to rape 15 women, none of whom came forward?) As did Laura's – top marks for cheek but would the carer really have let a stranger into the house and then allowed her to rummage through the shed, which as we previously saw was padlocked? Sillier and sillier.
I agree with this too – he's dead, thank goodness. I don't really care whodunnit – as the camera panned in I was assuming he might have done the decent thing and topped himself, but no, there had to be another mystery. Let it lie there.

ITV have no doubt been delighted at the size of the audience - which has regularly been 7 or 8 million, right up there with Corrie - and are sensing another Broadchurch. I wouldn't be surprised if Liar was originally planned as a one-off, with the ending we got being an alternative one held in reserve to accommodate a sequel.
Series 2 is a long way off - filming won't begin before January 2019.
