I imagine most of us started on desktop computers or laptops.
We had a family desktop for quite a while before Junior flea and I shared a laptop. Now Junior has his own laptop, Mr F has an iPad Air and I have a Samsung Tab A.
I absolutely hated tne tablet experience to start with, especially the touch key pad. It probably took me 6 months before I loved it but now, well, I haven't turned my (old) laptop on for a couple of months and doubt I will in the near future.
Anyway I thought we could have a tablet thread.
Good and bad, hints and tips, recommendations etc etc.

Think it was 3 or 4 Christmases ago ,Argos was doing a deal on the Kindle Fire, so that was my present from OH,with a 7 inch screen, was even sure what it could do,and was a revelation. Then early last year,it fell to the floor and the screen cracked, still usable, but this year as my retirement present to me l bought a galaxy tab 4 with 10 inch screen. The comparison in quickness and clarity is amazing, can't believe how slow the kindle is and haven't switched that on for month's, still there as back -up. As for laptop, now and again, if l have some printing to do,or some financial stuff, what for about an hour a week, tops, yet hardly off this tablet, my communicaton with the outside world, don't have a smartphone, screen and keyboard too small. Odd to think how things have moved on in just the past few years. And can take pictures,Skype, trouble is it becomes an obsession, the first thing you switch on in the morning

I had been thinking of replacing my laptop with another but have now decided that, if I want a bigger screen, then I shall get a bigger tablet with a separate keyboard. Not sure though, I'm very happy with my 10" (almost).
One thing I do love is not having to worry about viruses. I guess that will change though.

I look at my tablet first thing, every day. Great to check on The Weather, News Headlines, Bargain of The Day...... Have the new version of the Amazon Kindle Fire. Love it, except I never get around to using most of the things on it!

Yes. The new version of the Kindle Fire, is much more like a standard Android tablet. My g-daughter has one and seems to be forever on it. I have an older 6" tablet - about six years old, which is quite antiquated compared with more recent tablets like the Samsung. I use that as an internet-radio and alarm clock, these days. Jobs it still does very well.

I had a Google Nexus 7 for several years, and that was very good for a smaller tablet, and our son still uses his.
I treated myself to a larger iPad in January though, as the Nexus was a bit slow and I fancied a larger screen. I've not had any Apple products before. It is lovely, runs beautifully and smoothly, looks great, high-quality screen (a must), good for watching films even. Not cheap, though! My only minor quibble, the cut and paste function is pretty hard to control.

I have an ipad4 (I think) and really love it for email and the Internet (things like forums or just browsing) as it is much quicker. I quite agree about the copy/cut and paste function being hard to control. When I have tried to do some of that sort of thing on this board I have found it a lot easier on the PC. I do prefer to make any purchases using the PC or anything requiring a printout. My printer decided it was no longer an Airprinter for a few months, don't know why. Then when I tried it again recently it worked OK.
I bought mine in an Apple Store and they were really good at setting it all up for me.

Only recently I realised I could do without my laptop as I only switched it on to catch up on updates so thought I should ditch it completely as the mechanics are so different. Mine is a Lenovo Android and I have coped with getting used to its ways for about 18 months. Yes the C&P varies so avoid that as much as I can and not to keen on the white keyboard where some of the options don't work well, trial and error most of the time. I mostly use a stylus because of a shaky hand. Love getting settled on my recliner, feet up as its so light, whereas if I try the laptop on lap it's too weighty ! Now to get rid of laptop.,I have a few options and no doubt will choose the easiest ......where I bought it a small local business

I do quite a lot of C + P and I really hate the on-screen keyboard so I doubt I will bother getting a tablet unless I have to.

I love my laptop for work (as it has headphones, a foot pedal and keyboard plugged into it, full Microsoft Office, plus it's on a stand), but I like sitting on the sofa with the tablet, or reading it in bed. They're both good, in different ways.

It is funny, a lot of people who have older Kindle Fires dislike the new Kindle Fire; yes, you can get used to it, but, personally, my trusty HDX is much easier to work with (the new HDX is much more expensive, so I don't want to upgrade yet).

There are quite a few WiFi and Bluetooth keyboards with built in laptop-type mouse-pads which will work with either Android or IPad tablets. I bought one for C & P. Don't use it for writing emails and text stuff, as the speech recognition on the tablet is excellent.
