Stacked high, but most of them are fairly small and/or slim.

But a Kindle is not so comfortable on your chest when you fall asleep

Oh, I always put the kindle down and turn off the light the light when I get 'blinky' - if you know what I mean (I think they reference it it in Honey. I Blew Up the Kid). I don't think I'd be able to drop off while holding something. (And I always read and sleep on my side).

Makes a kindle so much more convenient! It is why I have a Fire tablet. It allows me to store all my music, as many books as I want, watch videos and browse the internet. I really like reading a book while listening to some music in the background. The only problem is that it is very easy for me to fall asleep. I have known myself to wake up a couple of hours later on the same page with the music still playing.

I usually read before going to sleep, and try to go for ones which can be easily put down (though it doesn't often work!). I currently have beside my bed - although bear in mind some of these are ones I simply haven't got around to putting back on the shelf(!): Tank Spotter's GuideEats, Shoots & Leaves - Lynn Truss Running A Big Ship - Rory O'Conor The Little Pot Boiler - Spike Milligan The History of England by a partial, prejudiced & ignorant Historian - Jane Austen Writes of the Church - Gary Alderson The Way of the Sheep - Sergei Heroes of the Coffee Rota - Dave Walker How to Avoid the Peace: Tips for Advanced Churchgoing - Dave Walker British Battlecruiser vs. German Battlecruiser 1914-16 - Mark Stille British Frigate vs. French Frigate 1793-1814 - Mark Lardas The Court of Oliver Cromwell - Roy Sherwood Private Eye: Colemanballs 13Oliver Cromwell: An Adventure from History - L. Du Garde Peach Dinosaurs - Gerrie McCall A Brief History of Time Lords - Steve Tribe What an intriguing collection! Catering for a wide taste range. I have just 2 on your list., the Lynn Truss and Jane Austen and I recognise L. Du Garde Peach. Are they permanently there or do you change one or two over time? I do have a bookcase (just 3 shelves) next to the bed but the row on top of a chest of drawers is growing again. Aside from that I do have bookcases in every room apart from bathroom and kitchen, so many to choose from.

I've always got several books on my Kindle - can't hold a book comfortably and I don't ave to worry about having nothing to read because there's always several waiting to be read.
Current book is "The Eyre Affair" by Jasper Fforde. It's the first in a series which was a specialist subject on Mastermind a couple of weeks ago and sounded interesting. It is - it's completely nuts!
It's set in 1985 and the Crimean war has been going on for 135 years, the Goliath Corporation runs the country, the "police" force has numerous departments with SO prefixes all the way up to SO27 and beyond including a literature department, a villain who is just about invisible and kidnaps characters from books, plus an inventor who has invented a B2 pencil with a built in spell-checker and translating carbon paper among other things.
As I said - completely nuts, but quite fun and light to read at bedtime.

Whereorwhen, in theory they get changed but I'm not as good at it as I should be! Janetdoe, I resisted a Kindle for a long time but eventually gave in for storage reasons - though I still prefer a physical book. I have The Eyre Affair on it which I shall get around to reading at some point! (I like his Nursery Crime books - shame he only did two). I'm currently reading on it - as my book for work breaks - the last of the Gerald Durrell Corfu books

I remember L.du Garde Peach from childhood radio Children's Hour. I knew he also wrote for adults but I have not read anything by him myself. My new book is The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton. It promises well.

His Oliver Cromwell is actually a Ladybird book. I saw a cheap second-hand copy and, as an enthusiast of the Civil War/Commonwealth period, bought it out of curiousity. It's an interesting take on the subject!

It was slightly unfortunately the first book in his new series, Shades of Grey, came out at about the same time as the rather racier novel of the nearly identical title. Still, might have accidentally got him a few extra readers!

I loved it! I'm hoping there will be a follow up.
