Just heard that Martha Kearney is joining the Today programme in a job swap with Sarah Montague who is moving to The World at One. A very welcome change for me. Martha is one of the best political interviewers and will be a welcome breath of fresh air on Today, along with Mishal Husain who has been there for a while now. Just need a shakeup in the male line up now! I still haven't forgiven them for getting rid of Ed Stourton.

Let's hope they strengthen the journalism and drop the gimmicks.
On the programme today there was an interview where the interviewer was in a factory in the North East, interviewing a politician who was in London. I had to turn it off because the background noise in the factory, which sounded like a vacuum cleaner, made it a very hard listen. Switched over to Radio 3.

I thought she was leaving because of her pay. I seem to recall that Sarah Montague was the only Today presenter who didn't even appear on that list of top earners. She seems to do the same job as everyone else......
I was very annoyed when they got rid of Ed Stourton as well, Helen.

Made the mistake of tuning into the Today programme again only to become annoyed by a style of interviewing which was over confrontational.
The item was about the regulation of debt collectors and bailiffs. The women from Citizens Advice was given plenty of airtime and tried to explain the problems they saw. The chap from the trade association was continually interrupted and given less time to make his points.
No mention of how many bad debtors there are causing misery to landlords and huge problems for local Councils. Just watch some of the programmes on rogue landlords or high court enforcement agents to see how some (but by no means all) seem to have a cavalier attitude to paying their bills.
Back to Radio 3 for me.

It's the constant interruptions I can't stand. Mishal Hussein (sp?) is a serial offender for this, I can't abide listening to her interviews I'm afraid. R3 is apparently wiping up more and more listeners.

Really? She's one of my favourites. I'm also becoming a fan of Sarah Smith, who is doing the rounds of various programmes at the moment since the Sunday Politics finished. I heard her today on PM and liked her there too. What with them and Martha Kearney there's been a real turnaround on Today – sorry you don't like Mishal!

Just been listening to the news. Young woman is pregnant – what a shocker! Is this news? And are we going to be bombarded with it for the next 8 months or so? More importantly, Evan Davies has taken over from Eddie Mair (sniff!) on PM so I wonder who is going to take his place on Today. I was hoping Sarah Smith would become a fixture but it seems not.

I used to be an avid listener to Today but now I only switch it on first thing in the morning to hear the news as I hate the confrontational style of most of their interviews, at times verging on downright rude with constant interruptions. Instead I have switched my allegiance to PM at 5 o'clock. Since Evan Davis took it over (I never liked the rather sarcastic Eddie Mair) I think it has become an object lesson in how to interview someone in a polite, even genial way and still push for the answers to questions. I think this points to the producer or editor being responsible as I recall that Evan Davis used to annoy me as much as any of the other presenters by interrupting and being confrontational when he was on Today.

It is better than it used to be, Vicky, and will be even better when John Humphreys finally hangs up his mic, which he's been threatening to do for years. Martha and Michal are both very good, and I don't say that because they are women – I never liked Sarah Montague or, in her day, Sue McGregor, both of whom interrupted constantly. The one I really don't like is Justin, whose whiny voice makes me want to slap him.

I like Martha, Nick and Justin. I can't abide Mishal and her interruptions! Sarah Montague was a shocker for that as well.

She doesn't seem so bad on The World at One, again supporting my theory that it is down to the producer. I think all the current Today presenters are guilty of rudely interrupting although Martha is the least bad.

The format of the programme is also different. Today began as a magazine programme and still is, with short, snappy segments to accompany what listeners are doing at that time of the day – preparing for the day, possibly rushing around and carrying out quick, short tasks. WATO and PM go at a more leisurely pace and have in-depth analysis of the news, so the interviewers have more time.
Every now and again, Today introduces new segment such as the one on the arts, amid howls of protest from listeners who think that news means political news and nothing else. R4 listeners famously don't like change – remember the fuss when The Archers moved from 19.05–19.20 to 19.02–19.15? Or when they started ending programmes a couple of minutes early so that programmes could start on the hour after the news bulletin? That didn't last long, but the new Archers time is still with us.

What annoys me about The Archers time is that on the EPG it is 19.00 -19.15 but if you record it, it cuts off before the end of the programme. And we all know the last few seconds can be the most interesting of the show! I always have to set it up as an individual recording, 19.02-19.17 to be sure of getting it all.

It never occurred to me to record it – it's available on the repeat the following day and also on the iplayer (and the omnibus if you're desperate!). Do you keep recordings to savour the best bits?! Agree it's irritating if a recording is chopped off before the end. It happens a lot on commercial channels, perhaps because the ads are not of uniform length.
Upsetting news for Shula this evening. I wonder what that might be – unsuccessful in her bid to be ordained? Or Jim giving her a piece of his mind for organising his party?
