Predator, the scandal of J-Pop.
Actually this was on BBC2 but isn’t worth a new thread. It aired on Tuesday and I watched it last night. Now I know nothing of J-Pop except for seeing the occasional well-drilled boy band and had never heard of Johnny Kitigawa, the deceased music mogul who is accused here of serial sexual abuse of the young boys in his charge. But honestly it reminded me of the exposé on Jimmy Saville… except this happened for years and was kept a closely guarded secret. And it still is! The presenter, a very good Mobeen Azhar, tried to get comments from not just the company he ran but the press, radio stations, TV, any reporter really, and hit a wall of silence. The company seems to be all powerful: it would be like having Jimmy Saville Productions blazed across Piccadilly Circus. He also interviewed boys who detailed what had happened to them and they seemed quite accepting too. It really was a very strange programme, very interesting indeed, and quite shocking too. I know Saville got away with it but at least his reputation is totally shredded. Kitigawa got away with it but still seems to be held in high esteem.

Nelly and Nadine, Ravensbrück 1944 : Storyville
This was on last night and I’ve just watched it. These two women meet in Ravensbrück camp. Nelly was a singer, and a heroine of the Resistance for which she was imprisoned. Nadine was the daughter of the Chinese ambassador to Spain and had been a member of a top literary salon in France but exact reasons for her arrest are not documented. They fall in love immediately and amazingly both survive. After meeting again after the war they go to live in Caracas, where they seem to build up a gay coterie and live until Nadine’s death. Also amazingly, the film makers interview Nelly’s granddaughters who have a huge stash of documents and home movies, never read or watched, in the attic! It could make a museum!!
This was a lovely film. A little loose in its structure but a wonderful love story. Nelly’s daughter didn’t like Nadine, or approve I suspect, and the granddaughters had no idea of the full story, despite regular visits to Venezuela. It is well worth the watch and is very poignant.

Inside Kabul : Storyville.
This was in last night so should be on iPlayer. It’s only 30 minutes and it is the day to day story of two young Afghan women, one of whom stayed in Kabul and the other who left with her husband. The stories have been made as an animated film and it is really rather good. These are just two very quiet narratives, recorded on their mobiles, and effectively told. It’s very quiet, not a big production number at all but I thought it was very good.

The Hidden Children of Ruinerwald Farm
Started last Tuesday and finishes next week, but is on iPlayer.
Apparently this is a famous news story but it passed me by. A bonkers Moonie and his wife lived in the countryside with their nine children. The first three went to school as normal but he then stopped registering them so the younger six were totally isolated. I think this was filmed around 2020 and the three oldest had run away about ten years previously but hadn’t called in the authorities. The fourth one bowled into a pub and seemed very nervy so they called the police and the family was raided. The documentary is all talking head interviews with the four oldest, with family video footage. Of course we have heard a little about physical and sexual abuse, being forced to live in a shed, an apparent hatred of the oldest son who bore the brunt. The father has since had a stroke. The five youngest remain totally loyal and did not take part in the show. I found it fascinating and of course very sad.

Disappeared: Mexico’s Missing 43
This was actually on BBC2 and should still be on iPlayer. 43 students disappeared, just vanished. They went out with others one night in 2014 from their college (it seems to be the tradition that you go to the bus station and hijack a bus or two) and never returned. This was a fascinating case and I had never heard this story but it was apparently world famous. It ended up involving drug cartels, corruption within the authorities and military, falsification of crime scenes…. I still have about 10 minutes to go but it was really good and follows the families’ quest for justice and the work of various teams to discover the truth.
