Just back from seeing this and I am emotionally drained! It is from a well known (not to me) and possibly "young adult" book about bereavement. Conor is 13 and losing his mother to cancer as well as being bullied at school. His father lives in America with his new family and his grandmother is rather old.school. The monster is (I think) the spirit of a yew tree who comes to him at night with three tales but the fourth will be the truth from Conor.
This was so poignant, if you go take tissues. The staging is fantastic with the yew tree represented by ropes and the monster clambering through them. The ropes were used for other stuff too. There is no set, just a bare stage with a couple of flaps and eight chairs where actors not performing sit. They also pass any props to the actors performing. I thought the staging was just so clever. If I hadn't had to dash off to Waterloo and leap on a train as the service is up the creek today, I would have been sniffling away! It definitely leaves you cast down!!!!!
It only runs until 25 August but it wouldn't surprise me if it gets a WE transfer of a UK tour. Excellent stuff.

The film version of this is being shown on Sunday 5 April at 10.30 on BBC1. I dont know how it will compare to the stage version once it is opened up to different locations and they use CGI but the stage version was wonderful.
This is not a happy play so not for those currently avoiding anything gloomy.

I've read the book, so I'm looking forward to seeing the film.
