My current Freeview recorder device is packing up rapidly - at least twice an hour the disc reformats, or it just sticks on one channel, and you have to take out the plug and put it back in to get it back again.
Anyhoo, I've been searching the net and some local shops for a reliable Freeview box, that can attach to my very old-style TV with a scart lead. Sadly, these days it seems most of them need a jazzed up and funky flat screen/smart TV.
I refuse to get Goodmans (terrible, terrible) and am not a fan of Humax, since mum had one when the UK first went digital, and I found it very annoying to use.
Can anyone give me recommendations?
I'm quite content to go without the recording option, if necessary, and have TV only.

Have got 2 humax both over 10 years old, no problems doddle to use, and at one point they were recommended as no1. Connected successfully to my old CRT Sony trinitron via scart

I have a Humax. Had it just over a year and it's fine on a scart lead. Doesn't like a HDMI cable.

Bugger. Looks like I'll have to go with Humax, then.

I love my Humax! It is on an HDMI cable though.
and you can record two shows and watch a third. Brilliant! On my last one (name forgotten but not much cop) you were stuck with one.

That's coz you've got one with twin tuners!
The Humax that mum had was a pain. You press to record a programme, but instead of that being that, you then had to go into another place, and confirm that you wanted it, otherwise it wouldn't record.
My old Daewoo is soooo easy - just press record or record series, and you're done.
Please tell me that Humax have got better since mum got hers?!

Oh, I've been debating a new TV, but mine is on around 10 hours a day at the moment, and is nearly 20 years old. Doubtful the new ones will last that well.

Well unless you get one with triple tuners (I think that is a thing) but that seems excessive even for me. Well to to record on mine, you scroll along the EPG, click on the prog you want and it offers you the choice in a pop up box of record, or (if it is a series) to record the whole series. Click your choice and bingo. Or you can set manually if you want to for any reason. Sounds the same as your current one.

Mine is the same as Marion's. Series link is dead easy. And very useful when your short-term memory is as bad as mine.

Good points have already been made. One other thing to remember, is that those set-top boxes which only output at 720p HD or to CRT TVs, won't receive or display some channels broadcasting in full 1080p HD.

If it had been Freesat, I have a spare one going free. It has been lying on the top of the wardrobe for about 6 months.

Another Humax devotee here. I've had mine for a few years, with no problems at all. Easy to use. There are some good refurb deals on their website, too. I was tempted to buy one for the bedroom, but in the end plumped for an Amazon fire stick, which gives me all the "catch up" options I need. And all for £30! www.humaxdirect.co.uk/refurbished.html

This is in reply to The Lone Wanderer's post, ABOVE.
Out of choice and experience, I'd suggest a Roku box.. You can install Amazon, Netflix, Now and just about everything else as well as hundreds of channels and channel servers.
They're about £70 for the box, or £40 for the 'stick' version.
