Dad’s Army is reportedly set to make a comeback after 50 years.
Bosses at digital channel Gold plan to film three episodes next year of the classic TV sitcom with an all new A-list cast, reported the Daily Star.
Executives at the network were in discussions last night about which stars will play the iconic characters in the revival.
Only Fools and Horses actor Sir David Jason is rumoured to be a potential for the role of Captain George Mainwaring, with Hugh Laurie playing Sergeant Arthur Wilson, and hardman Danny Dyer as Private Joe Walker.
The shows will see lost episodes, including Under Fire, A Stripe For Frazer, and The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Walker, remade.
When the programme aired in the 60s and 70s it was standard practice for the BBC to regularly record over or discard tapes once shows were broadcast, meaning the three episodes were lost or destroyed.
They’ve not been seen by fans since they were first aired on TV in 1969.
The team at Mercury Productions will be using original scripts by Jimmy Perry and David Croft.
Pete Thornton, head of scripting at UKTV, said: ‘The Lost Episodes are currently being cast, with an extensive hunt on to find the perfect candidates to take on the daunting task of bringing these much-loved comedy characters to life once more.
‘We’ve been working on this project for several years and will be respecting the genius of the original series.
'If ever there was a time to stick to the script then this is it’ reported Radio Times.
Producers are thought to be eager to get original cast member Ian Lavender on board for the new episodes. The 72-year-old actor played Private Frank Pike, cementing himself in comedy history.
