Deutschland 83 follow up Deutschland 86 will receive its UK premiere on More4 on Friday March 8th at 9pm.
"Deutschland 86 picks up with Martin Rauch, his Aunt Lenora and their colleagues at the East German foreign intelligence agency HVA three years after the events of Deutschland 83. Abandoned by Moscow and desperate for cash, the East German leadership pushes their secret operatives to experiment with global capitalism and save their sinking socialist ship. Long banished to Africa for his sins in 1983, Martin Rauch is now sent back into the field. Dark deals and a dangerous mission lead him to South Africa, Angola, Libya, Paris, West Berlin and finally back to East Berlin, where he must make an impossible decision."[i/]

It's been a long wait since Deutschland 83 (3 years) but if Deutschland 86 is anything like as good it'll be worth the wait.
I'm a bit disgruntled though that it seems to have been "demoted" to More4, which doesn't have a free HD service. All the advance information up to now has been saying it would be on C4, like Deutschland 83.

I wasn't a huge fan of the first series, which I know was hugely popular and critically well received. But I shall watch as I do find East Germany fascinating. I think it was just the main character I couldn't get on with.
I'm currently watching the religious Danish series, Trapped, Liberty and Crimson Rivers. Four foreign language series!!!! I'm so p!eased they air this stuff. Even if the series isn't that great it is interesting to see what is out there. I'd be watching Greyzone if they showed more than one episode!

Oh, I quite liked the Martin Rauch character, a rather bungling and out of his depth spy, at least to start with. I liked his aunt Lenora too (played by Maria Schrader, who in the last year has been in 'The City and The City', and 'Fortitude' S3). A third series has been announced, 'Deutschland 89', set at the time of the fall of the Berlin wall.

I've abandoned ship! Too much Africa, not enough East Germany for me. I think if it had fewer episodes I could have stuck with it.

I didn't like it as much as Deutschland 83 to start with, but as it's all on All4 I've been watching ahead, and I think it's getting better. The mixture of moods appeals to me - at times it verges on comedy, but there are also sad and tragic things, plus some nail-biting moments.
I'm up to the end of episode 8 now, and maybe you baled out just too soon. After episode 4 although there is still talk of Africa, there haven't been any more scenes set there. Apart from a bit of Paris it's all been in East Germany and East & West Berlin.

Maybe I did but I don't think I'll take it up again. TBH I don't really see why this show gets all the accolades it does, as I think it is pretty average. I wanted to like it because I do like to watch foreign stuff.

I didn't watch the first series. Is it necessary, do you think, or can it be picked up? I guess you won't know that until it starts ...

I wouldn't say it's essential to have watched the first series, but it would help. It's not so much the relatively few references to events in Deutschland 83, because this is a completely different story. Mainly, it's an advantage to know the relationship between the principal characters on the East German side, who were mostly also in series 1.
