Ricky Gervais plays Tony, the Features writer for a small town giveaway newspaper, so we get the humour of the ridiculous stories he’s sent to cover. This is in stark contrast to his personal life, which has been devastated by the death of his wife.
i know, it’s Ricky Gervais. But he’s in restrained mode, with a good supporting cast, and I’m enjoying this bittersweet comedy-but-not-really.
And the dog is lovely.

I enjoyed the first episode and second, but gave up because I got too upset by the subject matter, but will probably go back to it as it made me laugh more than most recent comedies (The Goggleboxers seemed to like it as well.) The scene where Gervais and the photographer go to interview the older guy about his birthday cards. It starts funny, with Gervais having a go at the photographer for farting on the door step "well I didn't want to do it in the house" and then closing the door on him "you disgusting pig" and then switches to this beautiful scene where the older man talks about how he still talks to dead wife, all the things he'd mention before he still mentions now. I'm welling up thinking about it. And Gervais, who'd been complaining that the interview would be a waste of time as the story of the same birthday card was not worst mentioning, looks quite emotional (for him). And the dog is lovely, but is also quite sad. You get the feeling that the dog is the only thing keeping him going. He made a promise to his wife to look after the dog so if the dog wasn't there I don't know what he'd do.

Yes, the dog is keeping him going. It was telling, when he went to the supermarket and only bought a can of dog food - but only one can, because he’s lost all sense of a future.
I find it very sad, but well balanced with the humour, so it’s not depressing me.

It is really funny, and I've only seen the 2 episodes. I might watch the rest after. It isn't an out and out comedy though, there are some hard bits, like you say about the dog food. It'd be easier to to buy a box of 12, maybe he does want to think that far ahead or maybe knowing the dog needs the food makes him leave the house, if he had enough for a week would he bother going out at all? But there's a good mix of light and dark. The goggleboxers seemed to like the bit where to swore at the kid the most! I did laugh at myself though.😂

I finished watching yesterday, and I think it’s the best “sitcom” I’ve seen in quite some time.

I finished watching yesterday, and I think it’s the best “sitcom” I’ve seen in quite some time. Agreed. I finished it this afternoon, watched the other 5 episodes, and I loved it. Sometimes Gervais can grate but I think he's done a really interesting show, when it's funny it's laugh out loud. The scene where the photographer was eating the rice pudding and was making him feel sick was hilarious. But also quite moving and tender in parts. The only part i Didn't like was him giving the money to the drug addict who later died. And the end had me tearing up when he was doing nice things, like seeing Kevin Hart on the magazine stand and then putting the picture in the snow globe. Really good show.
