More4 has secured the UK rights to the Canadian drama series.
“We’re delighted to be partnering with Channel 4 on bringing this ground-breaking series to the UK”, said Dan Gopal, eOne’s Executive Vice President of Sales – EMEA. “Mary Kills People is truly an original and captivating drama with thought-provoking content that has been engaging viewers all over the world. We can’t wait for UK audiences to enjoy the show.”
Created by Tara Armstrong, Mary Kills People follows Dr. Mary Harris, an overworked single mother and ER doctor, who lives a double life helping terminally ill patients with assisted deaths. So far Mary has managed to stay under the radar but her double life is getting complicated. When her world starts to unravel, Mary realizes she’s going to have to fight dirty if she’s going to stay in the killing game.
The drama series, which has been renewed through season three, stars Caroline Dhavernas, Jay Ryan and Richard Short.

I quite fancied this, but not sure I could watch it with my son who has autism. They made him and his classmates (Special School for children with autism) watch a documentary about the Nazis killing people with special needs in a history class and the whole euthanasia thing sends him into extreme anxiety and it is years since he left school. He worries hugely that people already think he isn't worth anything and more so that people would think it was easier to get rid of him than pay for any support. I worry that he is vulnerable enough to be talked into euthanasia by suggestible people and the whole thing is horrifying. He has sleepless nights sometimes worrying about what will happen to him when I am not here and of course I can't tell him that I have them too but neither can I reassure him that things will be fine. So although I am intrigued by the series I think I'll have to pass. I do wonder if people ever think of this angle when they talk about euthanasia.

I am supporter of euthanasia but that is one area that worries me about it. It would need some very strict guidelines to prevent that happening.

In this series Mary does seem to have fairly strict rules, at least in the one episode so far. Her clients are people who have been told by their doctor (not her, though she is a hospital doctor) that they are terminally ill, and want a quicker and easier exit than will be the case if they just let nature take its course. Mary deals directly with the client on his/her own; after she has explained her service to them, it's up to them to call her if they want to commit. She uses pentobarbital (acquired on the black market by her accomplice, who visits the clients with her), delivered not by injection but in a drink which the client takes him/herself when ready without pressure.

It is really, apart from not being in Switzerland and therefore illegal.

It is legal in a number of states and people do move to those for that reason.

I watched episode 1 and thought it was OK but reckon it will be quite tricky to get the right tone in this. In truth it would be a pretty depressing story, so to lighten it up tastefully will be a challenge. The IMDB reviews I read suggest it goes downhill into soap territory pretty quickly but I shall stick with it for now.

I'm still liking it and sticking with it.
More4 is annoyingly mucking about with the schedule though. Episode 4 tonight is at 11.00 pm, not 10.00 pm as shown in the printed Radio Times. Episode 5 next week is even later - 12.10 am.

I am still watching and quite like it. Those two cops are a tad obsessed aren't they? I mean I get the legal situation but the black guy in particular seems like a man on a mission to me. Perhaps someone he knew committed suicide.
I looked at my list of recordings last night and thought the timing for this looked a bit off! So they moved it. I guess it isn't getting very good ratings then! When that happens on Pick they move the show to 02.00!

I think it's pressure from this Judge Grant, whose son was one of the people Mary "offed" - he's suspicious about the death because his son left a diary behind. He's leaning on the cops and badgering them to make progress.

Well I watched to the end and didn't care about any of them by then. In fact if it had lasted more than six episodes I might have abandoned ship. I shan't bother with series two, if there is one.
