His Dark Materials follows Lyra, who lives in Jordan College, Oxford. Placed there at the request of her Uncle, Lord Asriel she lives a sheltered life amongst the scholars and college staff while under the watchful protection of The Master and Librarian Scholar Charles.
When the glamorous and mesmeric Mrs Coulter enters Lyra’s life she embarks upon a dangerous journey of discovery from Oxford to London. Here she meets Father MacPhail, Lord Boreal and journalist Adele Starminster at a glittering society party where she first hears about the sinister General Oblation Board.
Lyra is subsequently thrown into the nomadic world of the boat dwelling Gyptians who take her North in her quest. Once in the North she meets charismatic aeronaut and adventurer Lee Scoresby who joins them on their epic journey and who becomes one of Lyra’s closest allies.
The drama series stars Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Clarke Peters, Ian Gelder, Ruth Wilson, Will Keen, Ariyon Bakare, Georgina Campbel, Anne-Marie Duff, James Cosmo, Lucian Msamati, Mat Fraser, Geoff Bell, Simon Manyonda, Lewin Lloyd, Daniel Frogson, Tyler Howitt and Archie Barnes.
The drama is set to premiere later this year.

Looks interesting. Based on Philip Pullman's novels and commissioned for BBC One back in 2015, but production didn't start until last year.

No mention of Will then. Shame, as he is as major a character as Lyra.

No mention of Will then. Shame, as he is as major a character as Lyra. - presumably because this first series is based only on the book 'Northern Lights' in which Will does not yet appear. However a second series has apparently already been commissioned.

Any news if they have taken all the religion out, like they did with the film?

Still have the book to read but saw the film with Nicole Kidman as Mrs Coulter. Am looking forward to this so will keep a look out for "when". Ruth Wilson and Ann Marie Duff are the only names I recognise but are two actors I like watching. Wonder if Ruth is to play Mrs Coulter?

Sounds interesting, I look forward to seeing it. Never read the books, but did see the film.

The film was lightweight fluff compared to the books. It completely changed the emphasis of the story and left out a lot of important stuff. If the series follows the books more closely, I doubt you will recognise what you are watching.

What a coincidence. Onlyson and I found one book in the Opshop. He found one in a charity shop whilst holidaying in the UK so I ordered the last book on the big river site.

Does anybody know if it is going to be released as a box set, or is it week by week?

I've got the series on my tablet, including Lyra's Oxford, but I never got round to reading them because something else always got in the way. I originally got them to read before the TV series, so I'd better hurry up.

Interesting article about the series, here: Philip Pullman and the watershedThe bit that troubles me, though is: This BBC One series, starting on 3 November and based mainly on Pullman’s first book, Northern Lights, will be followed this time next year by a second eight-parter, inspired by The Subtle Knife. The BBC has not, however, committed to a third (10-part) series of The Amber Spyglass. I'd be slightly miffed if they decided not to show it, and it ended up on Sky.
