Any artiste (it's usually a female) 'singing' in that dreadful wailing-up-and-down-the musical-scale style that seems commonplace these days - makes my ears and head hurt

I call it "Norman Wisdom" stylee. Don't know who originated the style but it's been around for what seems years. Why can't they sing in their natural voices? They must be trained to sing that way. Often on the X Factor they start off singing in their natural voice and by the end are singing like Norman! Ella Henderson is a good example.

Are you sure? Norman Wisdom singing a song that he actually wrote: This song reached #3 in the UK Charts in March 1954, and was in the charts for 15 weeks. See Number 89 here

I was referring more to his speaking voice in some of his films e.g. "Mr Grimsdayale" rather than his singing voice which was good.

For the life of me, I can't see how His Bobness of Dylan and Stevie Wonder can be overrated, but each to their own.
But from what I saw last week, Jack White certainly is.
