We saw this today at Richmond, and if I had to sum it up in one or two words, they would be “pretty dreadful”. I mean I wasn’t expecting much but any show which needs a lengthy explanation of the story in the second act means they haven’t expected the audience to follow it. The actors were OK. The only one I recognised was Danny John-Jules but it was not gripping at all. The bonkers Opus Dei monk wasn’t really frantic enough to carry any threat. The staging was OK. But really, I think it’s not worth a visit. Only medium applause from the Richmond crowd. At least it only lasted for two hours, including the interval. I was tempted to leave after the first act but saw it through as the second act only lasted 47 minutes, 😂.
