To Wimbledon this afternoon and WOW! What a brilliant show we saw.
I saw this stripped back production in 2016 and it was very good (John Partridge, Hayley Tarmaddon, Sam Bailey). There is a ten piece orchestra on stage throughout and an ensemble of about 10 dancers/chorus. It is very, very tightly drawn.
This was at a higher level, absolutely on point, no beat or accent missed and total synchronicity. And very sexy. You just could not fault the dancing at all. There are about to be various cast changes and the website is confusing so I can’t say who will be on where exactly. We saw Russell Watson as Billy Flynn(to be Lee Mead) and no trouble with the vocals there! Roxie was Faye Brookes from Corrie and DOI, Velma was Djalenga Scott who I think is mainly a stage performer and both were great. Mama Morton was Sheila “Three Degrees” Ferguson whose voice was OK… but a word of warning as this is soon to be Gemma Collins, 😱, and possibly Sinitta. The only dubious character really was B E Wong playing Mary Sunshine, the reporter whose voice really was sharp. But so what? That’s a minor point.
Anyway I loved it, my theatre group all seemed very happy and the audience went wild. It really put some of the recent offerings I’ve seen in the shade. Fantastic.

Well I did wonder if they would hire a dedicated understudy!

I think they should, given her reputation

Exactly. It’s the DOI injury allegedly but she was at Chelsea yesterday. And Mama Morton hardly dashes about, in fact one song is seated! I’m sure it could have been sorted out. If James Earl Jones could play Much Ado largely seated and allegedly with an oxygen tank in the wings……. Alongside Vanessa Redgrave in one of the most unfortunate castings I have ever seen. Still it was good for a laugh!
