This isn’t my favourite musical from the period, lovely songs but I’m not too keen on the story as played by the ghastly Rex Harrison (sorry, fans!). Still, this production comes from Broadway where it got rave reviews and has been puffed up here as well. It is a diverse production with Eliza played by Amara Okereke and her father by Stephen K. Amos. Higgins is played by Harry Hadden-Paton.
This got a bit of a mixed reception from our group. Some found it brilliant, my friend was underwhelmed and I thought it was good in parts. Eliza has a lovely soprano voice, but she was a caricature in the Cockney, or rather Cockerney, sections, and I found her hard to hear. Higgins was played as a much younger version than usual, but I still find him a toxic character. Freddie was an excellent singer and in fact all the main solos were sung beautifully. Get Me To The Church on Time was a bit too Gor Blimey Guv’nor for me, quite extended with a stag do including the can-can and cross dressing, which was a surprise but not a particularly good one, 😂. They tweak the ending of the show. I thought the ensemble were great and almost outdid the stars. They were certainly easier to hear.
So a curate’s egg for me. Enjoyable but not as great as it was cracked up to be and TBH I much preferred the cut back Oklahoma! at the Old Vic starring the Doctor Who companion!

Arthur Darvill as Rory? I would have loved to have seen that.
