This is by the same guy who wrote One Man, Two Guvnors, and is a reimagining of Sheridan’s The Rivals set at a WWII airbase in 1940. It stars Caroline Quentin as Mrs Malaprop and Kelvin Fletcher as a sergeant mechanic, and yes, there is a dance number!
I thought this was really good and very funny. The language is a bit fruity and the malapropisms of a somewhat sexual nature most of the time (clitoris/clematis) but the audience were in fits the whole time. The end is somewhat muted but otherwise, it’s great fun.
This was largely Caroline Quentin’s show. She was very broad, with good timing, and nimble. She went down really well with the audience. I’ve never seen her on stage before and wondered if she might be a bit of a ham, but she did the role perfectly. Actually she’s coming to Richmond in Mrs Warren’s Profession soon so I may well see her there as well (like a London bus, you wait forever then…). The maid was extremely funny, with some very funny quips direct to the audience. But the whole cast was extremely good even though I don’t know the names!
I saw One Man…. went it went on a National tour, and if this does go on tour it would be well worth the trip. The audience loved it, as did I. My friend got a bit tired of the sexual innuendo and thought our recent Oklahoma! was better, but that this was still very good indeed.
