TV's The Yorkshire Vet - based at the original James Herriot practice - has been such a hit that a new series and Christmas special have already been commissioned. The fly-on-the-wall documentary series based at Skeldale Veterinary Centre, on which the BBC drama All Creatures Great & Small was based, has been pulling in an average of 1.3million viewers for Channel 5 The new series starts this month. I love this series and I am so pleased it is back

What a lovely series this is. Full of great characters (and animals) One couple in their 90s still running a farm (Breed folk tough in Yorkshire) One woman, so obsessed with her Parrot...had everything in her house (even her coat) green to match it.

I also love this series except for one thing! Whenever the younger vet does an operation he wears gloves. But I have never seen the older "old school" vet wear gloves when doing an op. Surely this is risking an infection to the animal (if not to himself). His excuse is probably that he has never used gloves and finds them uncomfortable but I don't think this is a valid excuse when it comes to animals' lives at stake.

In tonight's episode the older vet did a major op on a dog's pelvis yet he didn't wear any gloves; the nurse did wear gloves. I don't understand.

I still have one episode from last year to watch but thrilled to learn more have been made. They treat such a wide variety of animals - from farm stock to exotics, family pets and unusual livestock like Llamas. The senior vet is a joy (gloves or not) - so calm and reassuring, just what you want a vet to be. Not that I don't adore the other partner too.
The locals are such characters, particularly the older couple running their scaled down farm. I seem to recall they got rid of most of their dairy herd some time ago - but within weeks they had bought some calves to rear as they love to keep busy!
Still smiling at the 'lump' on Billy the dog - which turned out to be boiled sweet matted in his fur. He reminds me of the imfamous 'Tricky Woo' from the original books - spoilt and adored in equal measures.
I was hoping that the BBC would give us more of their series 'Young Vets' which was broadcast in 2015, but sadly it seems to have fallen by the way side. Animal programmes are always popular and the various students were great. I doubt they cost a lot to make.....
Thankfully Ch5 give us The Yorkshire Vet!

Looks like the BBC are not going to give us more of their series "Young Vets" which proved popular on its first airing 2 years ago. Pity, because animal programmes always get a good following....

Was nice to have this back last night, till the black cat bit...
One of channel 5s best programmes, just wish they would just not keep plugging it constantly though.
