When I first saw this new play by David Edgar was on I wasn’t that bothered about it. It is the story of the (ruptured) friendship between the director Elia Kazan and the playwright Arthur Miller, and the former’s naming names to the House Un-American Activities Committee. Then I saw the casting and Kazan is played by Shaun Evans, Endeavour himself!!!!
So it was a packed theatre today. The play is mainly set in Kazan’s house with the two protagonists thrashing out their differences or reminiscing. Miller is played by a very famous (in his own country) Israeli actor Michael Aloni making his UK debut. Kazan’s wife is played by Faye Castelow and Marilyn Monroe, playing a bit of a Greek Chorus role as well as her own interactions with the two as she had a fling with Kazan before marrying Miller, is played by Jasmine Blackborow.
The Orange Tree is very small and plays in the round, so you are up close to the action. It was quite wordy but it was also very interesting and occasionally funny. The acting was magnificent from all four, really top knotch stuff. It’s straight through at 90 minutes and got a brilliant reception from the audience. I saw someone from my theatre group by chance and she loved it, as did a friend who went on Thursday. So a thumbs up from all of us.
