One film that always stayed with me for years, because of its mystery, setting and atmosphere, is Quatermass and The Pit (the one where they discover some sort of alien capsule/rocket, in a deep level London Underground station). Just wondered what you found particularly scary, memorable or disturbing.

I saw a film in the seventies called The Sentinel. Can't remember who was in it (except for Burgess Meredith) but it was about a young woman moving into an apartment in an old house. All the other tenants were really weird, and there was a blind priest in the attic, who seemed to be permanently sitting at the window. I won't spoiler it in case it comes on telly, but my friend and I saw it at the cinema and it was very frightening. Scary films don't usually stay with me after I've watched them, but this one did. There was one jump out of your skin moment, and my friend screamed at the top of her voice, much to the amusement of everyone else.

I think Quatermass scared most of the UK in the fifties. There was a scifi on TV at about the same time ,A for Andromeda( with Julie Christie),I found that quite disturbing.A good creepy film of about the same vintage would be Night of the Demon.(about devil worship)

And not forgetting also, the fantastic Rosemary's Baby, a film I still rewatch now and then.

The Haunting is the scariest movie I've ever watched. It was made in the 1950s, has hardly any special effects and no blood or gore at all. It frightened the absolute crap out of me. I had to go and wake up my flatmate to talk to me until I'd calmed down enough to sleep.

I think the first really scary film I saw was Rosemary's Baby. After that was probably the Exorcist (not in the 70s though, but when it came out on video). Latterly I found the Evil Dead and Nightmare on Elm Street brought me out a cold sweat. The latter I saw with Viv at the cinema, and because MrC was on nights, I slept with the lights on all night - and the next three!

I think it is the old horror films that are the most scary. I remember seeing The Curse of Frankenstein back in the day and it terrified me (Dracula too)
The modern one that creeped me out was The Shining...Still my favourite horror film.
