For anyone interested, this great programme is returning for a second series 8.00pm 11th October Sky Arts channel. Also available on Virgin. This programme is far superior to the annoying Big Painting challenge put on by the BBC. At least the judges are likeable and knowledgeable and not nasty to the contestants who are often a weird and wonderful group. It is also well presented by Frank Skinner , even if you don't like him he does seem genuinely interested in the contestants and their paintings. As a very amateur painter I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for this. Will set to record. It is an enjoyable series as was its predecessor, Portrait Artist of the Year. I agree that Frank Skinner is a great host and the participants are a varied bunch.

I absolutely loved last year's LAotY - I wish they'd do another Portrait Artist too - such talent!
I agree, Frank Skinner is excellent, Joan too of course but I think Frank is just perfect.

Just checked to see if there is to be a Portrait Artist of the Year, apparently the closing date for submissions was April this year so maybe the competition is going on at the moment . If so I 'm guessing it will be shown when the Landscape Artist one is finished screening. Hopefully it will.

Thanks for the heads up about this programme superdreen. I have made a note of it in my Radio Times. I love seeing artists at work and the pictures coming together.

Good first programme, interesting mix of contestants who did a good job with a difficult subject, it was very green! I find the judges very interesting although I don't always agree with them but I think they chose the right winner today.

I liked the winning one and the Taiwanese lady's one. Mr Crafty liked the chap from Southampton's one. I thought it was gloomy.
An enjoyable start to the series. Frank Skinner and Joan Bakewell are so lovely with the contestants.

Frank and Joan are great for this...shame the the Judges got it so wrong last year, with the winner...and the commission she got, to paint the Haywain view - my second cousin was the one who was given the painting, for the Museum, he was very diplomatic when talking about it afterwards....his dad said. As for this year, a very good start, the wining one looked like the subject....which is always a good start - liked the triplets doing their paintings, helping each other with parts of it.

Watched the second episode on catch-up and was very impressed by the winner - I'm usually quite a traditionalist but this one really appealed to me

As someone who uses stencils to make cards etc., I loved the winning painting this week. I admired Gregor for hand cutting his stencil. I have to admit to either using my computerised cutter to make them or buying pre cut ones.

Watched the second episode on catch-up and was very impressed by the winner - I'm usually quite a traditionalist but this one really appealed to me I was more impressed by the winner from the 50....was it just one colour she used, from a small tin box, amazing. As for the main winner....taking a photo, cutting out shapes from it, then spraying - yes it looked good, and a lot of cutting skills...I just didn't get it for this competition.

I thought this was an interesting series with lots of good artists, not convinced that the best one won though. We shall see what he makes of the commissioned picture he has to do , I don't think the building he has to paint looks very inspiring.

I thought all the finalists did well. Liked all the paintings as they were all so different.
Petworth House (which the winner will be doing a painting of) is lovely. We visited earlier this year, mainly to see the Turners. Mr Crafty is a fan.

I wasn't impressed either.
Wouldn't mind seeing his exhibition though. The paintings may be better "in the flesh".
