They aren't the most tuneful birds ever heard but a lot better than ours!

Re Starlings, strangely in my daily paper today a super photograph of swarming Starlings over Gretna Green in Scotland. Thankfully it gave the collective word for this event which I tried to recall last night.....a murmuration I enjoyed your Trio of Magpies singing

My serious birdwatching takes place over the summer months when the Ospreys return from the South.Sadly the one called Lady did not return a few years ago although another young one took over her nest. Lady returned to the same nest in Perthshire for over 20 years laying about 50 eggs most of which fledged.I enjoyed visiting the Centre with 3 hides as it is about 15 minutes from my home but mostly it was a daily visit to the webcam to watch her progress Lady had a worldwide fan base who gathered daily providing enjoyable posts on the SWT website If interested scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do/wildlife-webcams/loch-of-lowes/

Yes very dark but there is supposed to be a super moon this week and the Ospreys are sunning themselves probably NW Africa,we hope the same pair will return again in the early spring, I haven't looked in for a few weeks since they all left early autumn, I guess it's showing the nest or other scenes of interest I've just had a look and see it's part of the nest with the headlights of a car travelling on the other side of the Loch,a very quiet country road which I know well

A couple of years ago we stayed in a little village called Warborough in Oxfordshire. It was a lovely place and we had our own private outdoor terrace. The weather was brilliant so we went to sit outside, we had not been out there any more than 5 minutes when this bird of prey swooped over our heads. At first we thought it was a buzzard then we saw another one and realised it was a Red Kite! We sat there for longer and noticed there were loads of them. The next morning we mentioned it to the owner of the B&B and she told us they were part of a breeding program which originated in the Chiltern hills, it started a few breeding pairs, now there are over 20 breeding pairs which in turn have had youngsters of their own. They are magnificent, graceful birds.

Foggy, thinking I've seen amazing TV footage of that a few times if it's where they put out raw food for them and soon the air is filled with them swooping down

When I lived in Cardiff and we had visitors we always took them to see the Red Kites in the Brecon Beacons.

Somewhere on this Site, there was mention of how many or how few sparrows people have been noticing in their gardens these days. (Was it in the Green Room?)
We used to have quite a few sparrows, then their numbers tailed off. I fed the garden birds every single day through Autumn and Winter for several years, and the numbers of sparrows and bluetits increased - now we have dozens! I'm sure its because I and some of my neighbours have consistently fed them all - you should not feed the birds regularly and then suddenly stop, as it causes an artificial population which can't cope without consistent access to food.

I've got loads of sparrows cos they love the hedge in my garden. They both nest and roost in it. I also feed through the Winter and Spring so I've most likely helped in the population increase!

We've got loads of sparrows, we do feed them regularly though. They will always go where they know there is likely to be food & water.

Well, I have two new bird baths (one with a feeding platform, well actually the bath bit leaks anyway so that's the food bit!), and two fat balls on a tree. But where are the birds? Not seen any for ages. The woodpigeons used to be frequent visitors to the former bird bath, before it broke. Maybe they don't like the new colour! (green, was bronze).

Birds can see ultraviolet so it may be the colour that is putting them off. It could be glowing to them.

I have a female starling on the feeders! She's gorgeous. And so much bigger than the LBJs I've got used to. She's getting told off though cos she's taking up all the space on the fat ball feeder!
