Just been watching the last episode of the first series, currently being repeated on Drama. That's the one where Celia doesn't take kindly to Caroline's relationship with Kate. What a masterclass in acting by both Anne Reid and Derek Jacobi. Even if her change of heart is a little rushed!

The age of some of the cast might make it difficult if she leaves it too long as well.

I was wrong. Just been reading that Sally Wainwright has finished writing series 5 and it starts filming in September.

I'd heard a rumour that it was coming back.
That's the good news. The bad is that it means we will likely have to wait until sometime next year before we see it.

Excellent news! Looking forward to it already. I'd like to think they might bring the focus back to Anne and David (can't remember their characters' names at the moment). We'll see.

I've really tried with most of the series, but I just don't like the characters I enjoy having something to watch at that time on a Sunday, so I hope ITV will come up with something interesting...

I loved this series, so I'm pleased (very) that it's coming back. Can't believe it's 3 and a half years since it was last on!

Well, it does seem ages ago now, and I've almost forgotten the final events of the last series.
Not sure it all warrants another series, but we'll give it a go.
Saw the trailer where he goes to work in a supermarket ---- at his age?? really??

Is it an Asda? They always made a point of employing OAPs as greeters didn't they? If he is stacking shelves, not so likely I'd have thought. Exhausting!

Anne Reid and Derek Jacobi are on The One Show tonight. Seen the trailer, though I didn't realize he was working in a supermarket. Enjoyed the last few series, will probably watch this one.

Have just watched this as I felt the need to remind myself of the convoluted family relationships before watching the new episode. There's a rather unpleasant edge to Celia that wasn't there before. She and Alan have always been chalk and cheese – classic case of opposites attracting, which is fine but they don't seem to have any shared values now. She was always unaccepting of anything that didn't fit her notion of 'normal' – mainly Caroline's relationship with Kate – but she had a lot of sense and was genuinely kind and loving to Alan and both her family and Gillian's. Now they seem to be upping the ante on her and Alan's differences. I suppose they have to do something to keep the characterisation fresh.
On another note, Robbie's birthday card was written in a very childish hand. This is a man who was a police officer for years and would have handwritten many notes and reports, so you'd expect a scrawl!

Not thrilled with the new themes.... And it was awful seeing them sit through that celebratory dinner, with all the tension caused by Celia's remarks. Although I suppose that was the intention. No families are happiness personified, all the time.

Oh, I think it was. I have never liked the character who is a crashing snob and a bully. She has merely got worse with age! Poor Alan. I agree about the tension at the birthday meal, it was awful....and all caused by her. I do love the programme though and am so pleased it's back but disappointed there are only four episodes.
