I had never heard of this channel until I saw an ad earlier in the week and a mention in the paper today. Anyway, it is showing VIKINGS on Sunday at 10.00. It stars Gabriel Byrne and concerns the invasion of England. Now whether this will be anywhere near as good as Uhtred son of Uhtred is an open question, but it may be worth a look. The TV supp calls it a big bloody series with a grim swagger which pulls you in.

If it's the show I'm thinking of, I've heard it's really good. Is that a Freeview channel?

Bum. I shall have to retune my PVR. Which means I have to redo all my future recordings.... I think I shall have to write them down first.
Ta!

I've been watching this and I wouldn't rate it with Last Kingdom. It looks mightily impressive and has some good actors in it. But the writing isn't the same standard as LK. I'll stick with it because it may get better now all the set up is done.

There was a big fuss over some channels editing out chunks.

It's not as violent as I was lead to believe. It is violent, don't get me wrong, but it's nowhere near GoT level. So I'm guessing it's edited.

I have no idea if this is an edited version but it is pretty violent. A lot of it I think is down to the whooshing and thwacking noises as axes sever limbs etc etc. And is that monk Louis XIV?
I am still enjoying this, despite the harsh competition from Uhtred son of Uhtred.

Yes you're right, Athelstan is played by George Blagden who was Louis XIV in 'Versailles'. I've watched 'Vikings' on Amazon Prime, where series 4 ended a few weeks ago with the introduction of Jonathan Rhys Meyers to the cast as a dodgy bishop. Series 5 will come later this year. I don't know whether Blaze is going to show all the series to date but it's got some catching up to do...
I think it's excellent, and I see it as complementing 'The Last Kingdom', showing things from the Viking viewpoint rather than the Saxon one, with similar production values and attention to detail. The two shows though don't cover the same events since 'Vikings' is set about a generation earlier - Alfred comes into a later series but so far as it's got at the moment he's still a small boy.

Ragnar Lothbrok (Ragnar Shaggy-Breeches) is a legendary hero from Old Norse poetry and sagas.
Warning the link may contain spoilers because it gives information about the legendary figure, and how he relates to history. It talks about his life and death in legend. Some aspects of his story are mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragnar_Lodbrok
The question has to be whether or not we take things like Saxo Grammaticus' Gesta Danorum with a pinch of salt.
{Spoiler} The 12th-century Icelandic poem Krákumál provides a romanticized description of Ragnar’s death and links him in marriage with a daughter of Sigurd (Siegfried) and Brynhild (Brunhild), figures from the heroic literature of the ancient Teutons. The actions of Ragnar and his sons are also recounted in the Orkney Islands poem Háttalykill.
