What they haven't made clear since reverting to more or less the original format, is how they have chosen the 'fastest finger first' contestants. Originally, it was always for individuals to ring through to a phone line so there was very little in the way of testing - apart from the initial need to answer a couple of questions.
I'm not sure about the policeman woman's answers being ignorant though, to begin with - I found her rather condescending. And when she did start stumbling, like she said - I'm sure it's the atmosphere / lights/ cameras / music that make you even doubt your own name!
Anyway, back to my original point about the FFF contestants - I don't remember seeing any ads for people to enter!

The policewoman tonight was absolutely useless! Why don't they check that contestants have reasonable general knowledge? We could have got through her questions in a fraction of the time if she wasn't so ignorant! The television critic in the Telegraph yesterday was making the point that the programme is pointing up the lack of general knowledge these days. That certainly seems to be the case with most of the contestants so far. By the way, I don't like the man sticking his fingers into pies at the start and end of every ad break. I either leave the room or look away from the screen to avoid seeing him now. It is slightly sick-making....and very silly.

Yes! That man putting his finger in the pie makes me sick too!
I think general knowledge is far poorer than it used to be. JC can shame them into getting better educated!

Hope that Jezza gets a longer run in the chair. Probably to busy with other commitments.

I expect they're treating this celebratory series of episodes as pilot and will weigh up how successful it's been. I expect they will commission a proper run of eps if it's deemed successful.

I watched it and wondered if I had suddenly become more intelligent as many of the questions were very easy. I too, couldn't understand the policeperson taking a chance when she had no clue and Jezza had said he didn't either. Yes, he mentioned the right painting but he didn't know why he had mentioned it and what the connection might be, or who the painter was. Entirely her fault for going for it when neither of them knew.

To be fair to her, she did say it wasn't his fault. It was JC who was beating himself up over it.
Do you think they are told to hesitate and make a meal of some of the easy questions? I can't for the life of me remember the first question the first man (who I found extremely irritating) had; I only recall it was very easy but he dithered away over it before giving the correct answer.

So Majorca belongs to Spain, and oche is the starting line in darts. Who knew? W-e-ell, there was one lady who didn't seem to....... This is turning into a really cheap exercise for the programme makers!

To be fair the question talked about the Balearics, Majorca wasn’t mentioned unless I missed it.

Still the same level of lack of knowledge.
And tonight beavers, which caused a couple of double -entendres.
And l love the way JC goes to the ad-breaks.

It could be that the show has been off the screen for so long now (unless you watch Challenge avidly like I do at weekends) that people have forgotten how easy those first 5 questions are and are doubting their instinct (for the obvious answer) before actually answering.

I sometimes watch Mastermind and even on that the younger contestants show a lamentable lack of general knowledge.

My lads are all pretty good at General Knowledge. I think my interest in quizzes rubbed off on to them. The kind of games we used to have when they were growing up were Trivial Pursuit (various versions), Blockbusters, Countdown, Boggle (ok, not general knowledge for those two), and countless non-tv related quiz games. They all enjoy coming with us to the pub from time when it's quiz night and invariaby one or other will startle me by getting something really obscure correct. Usually turns out it's because they learnt it through watching shows like The Simpsons or Family Guy!

I think interaction with other people, reading and talking to others are vital for general knowledge. You’ve obviously spent time with your children as we did, now you see so many children with a mother who’s on her phone and giving them no attention at all or just parked in front of a screen. Apparently there are children starting school who can’t talk because nobody has ever talked to them, how desperately sad.
