Johnathan Dimbleby has hung up his presenter's mic after over 30 years of hosting Any Questions. I wish him well but I couldn't be more pleased. On occasions when he has been away, other, much less confrontational presenters have hosted the programme including Shaun Ley who is in the chair next week, Ritula Shah and Ed Stourton (who I miss very much as a former presenter on Today). I don't think any decision has been mad about a permanent replacement so I guess we will have a series of guest presenters for a while.

I think Ed Stourton is terrific as a presenter. But at the time of his departure from Today I read that the BBC regarded him as Posh Ed, so his days were numbered.

Really? I thought he was elbowed out to make way for younger presenters. Though given that John Humphreys is still there, that's nonsense. There was a backlash, as there always is when R4 does anything, but it didn't get his job back. I think he does The World at One from time to time, doesn't he?

He is on occasionally but I don't listen to WAO. I know that he is a committed Catholic and sometimes fronts religious programmes. I have heard him on a Sunday morning occasionally. I am sure he wasn't popular because he was, yes, an older male but I don't think the poshness and Christianity helped his cause (from what I have read). He was very popular with listeners though!

Yes, he's the main presenter on Sunday, which is the Sunday morning religious affairs programme. It's really current affairs but with the focus on matters of faith. I often listen as I'm waking up on a Sunday morning. Sunday featured on this week's Feedback, presented by Roger Bolton who 'came out' about his own faith, rather apologetically I thought.

I suspect the new host will be female.

To be fair we are only slowly moving from male domination of the media to a 50/50 situation, which is fair, but then perhaps we should have 500 years of female domination to get us up to speed!!!!

Since Kirsty Young has officially retired from Desert Island Discs she would be ideal, imo - but of course it is dependent on her health.
