God Subway annoy me. It's a franchise place like a lot of McDonalds, but unlike the McDonalds where the prices are the same from one city to the next (usually rail stations and airports have higher prices) Subway is not. I've been in a McDonald's in Piccadilly,London and Birmingham and towns and all the prices were the same. I've just got a sandwich from Subway and a cup drink (soda drink you press a button for) and she says "£4.59". I said I usually pay £3.69 for the same thing. Sandwich (I have the same thing every time and the cup drink you get at a lower price of 70p with the sandwich making £3.69 and that's in two different towns 5miles apart. Yet here they're making it up as they go along. The cheeky c*w even said "70p for the drink, I don't think so." She said you get drink and crisps/cookie. I said I don't want the crisps, just the sandwich and drink, so how much would that be. She said "it's the same, the crisps are free." But they're not free are they, because you're charging me £1.50 for a f**King drink that I usually pay 70p for. So my lunch has cost me 90p more than usual (the sandwich is 10p more aswell) which means the crisps are 90 f**kin' p!

Email the CEO asking for clarification of their pricing policy! (Unless it is a London rip-off with management approval. We all know that one.)

Subway started with a really good idea; sandwiches that were cheap, made quick and ready to eat on the run for a person who had just a brief moment before catching their subway train/tube, hence the name.
But over the years they grew so fast they lost their way.
Then there was the "Jared" debacle by which the tv advert face of the franchise, the morbidly obese bloke who lost 245 pounds and became lean and healthy eating Subway every day (and quite wealthy when they hired him on as their spokesman)
But then it turned out he was a padophile who...well never mind. He is in prison for a long time. Nuff said.
Personally I prefer Jersey Mike's or Firehouse subs. But Subway have so many locations, like Stsrbucks, that they are so convenient to pop in from time to time. And still the cheapest.
Though at Jersey Mike's I buy the kids meal. They always look at me a bit sideways but there are no restrictions on an adult buying a kids meal.
Its sandwich, crisps, drink and cookie and the sandwich is the same size I would make at home.

TBH, Prof, I would have put them down on the counter and walked out. It's bad enough being ripped off without them being cheeky with it!

Once something becomes a large chain they train their employees to be robots who could work at any of their global franchises and as a result they lose track of simple, flexible customer service. I think it was an episode of the Sopranos where two thugs go into a newly opened Starbucks to shake them down for protection money. The Starbucks manager - who seemed all of 18 - said he had no discretionary funds and anyway the corporation had insurance. One thug said "well what happens if there is an 'accident' and someone throws a brick through that giant plate glass window?" The manager replied "I have a corporate number I call and they send someone out in 30 minutes with a new window." "Well what happens if you 'fall' taking the trash out back and break both legs" "We have a fully vested health insurance package." The thug replied "well how about a free coffee and biscuit at least?" And the manager says "sorry, corporate counts every bean." The thugs leave and the one says "it's getting harder to be a simple wise guy."

After I wrote this message, while in Subway, I was about to leave and noticed a poster behind the counter that said 'Add a drink and crisps/cookie for £1.20'. So I asked the guy (who ended up getting a colleague) why I'd been charged £1.50 when the poster says £1.20. She said "did you tell the person who served you you were having crisps?" I said "no she told me I was having them!" Who is going to pay £1.50 for a drink when you can have a drink and crisps for £1.20! You may aswell have the crisps, save 30p and if you don't want them give them away or throw them away, which just seems insane, it's cheaper to take the crisps and throw them in the bin than not have them in the first place!...obviously I ate the crisps!...I also got 30p back! (I shall spend it wisely!) All the stuff in the press about obesity and food waste etc, this does not help.
We don't have those places here Yankeepov. I think there's more independant places that do similar. There's also Greggs and Pound Bakery, baguettes aren't great but very cheap and ok in an emergency, and pre-packed sandwiches at places like Boots, but most other places here are fast food, burgers, pizza etc, so try and go to Subway cause I don't feel quite so guilty as it's a bit healthier, but their pricing it terrible. I know it's a franchise thing but surely they should all get together on the same page. My local mall charges £4 for a 6" ham sub! Yet 2miles away it's £2.99! And these aren't capital/big cities, provincial towns.

I think all Subway franchises are independently owned and that is why you don't see uniform pricing and some locations wont take coupons that were clipped from the newspaper etc.
For all of their faults, one thing that McDonald's does well is make certain that all of their franchises toe the line. There might be some variations in prices based on the local economy (a McDonalds in downtown Manhattan may have some prices higher than one in a tiny rural community in Kansas) but their "specials" and dollar menu items are uniform at all locations.
If any location doesn't comply to the company model they will pull the franchise and corporate will run it until they find a new owner.
Here is the US Jersey Mike's is probably Subways biggest competitor. They seem to be opening new franchises all the time and advertise quite heavy on TV. So I wouldn't be surprised to see them take their shops to the UK fairly soon.
The quality of Jersey Mike's is better. Instead of how Subway has pre-sliced, pre-measured meat and cheese, Jersey Mike's has a number of slicers behind the counter and they slice the meat and cheese fresh for each sandwich in front of you.
They have more staff too, whereas Subway seems to usually only have one or two people behind the counter (who usually seem to be the franchise owners) JM's will have around 4. Once taking orders, one slicing the bread, meat, cheese, one doing the assembly line adding of ingredients and putting the sandwich together and one running the cash till. So the prices are a little higher. Another reason I buy the kids meal.
I've only been to 2 different JMs and the pricing was uniform but they were also in similar areas so I am not sure if their pricing varies like Subway based on location.

Speaking of lack of customer service. Seinfeld is spot on in this brief clip.
