Ah, a trip down memory lane! Do you know where the hospital was supposedly located, yankee? I see they also have the El which was such a feature of ER. St. Elsewhere was set in Boston
But good eye on the (elevated) El Trains.
Most large US cities have primarily subway systems or ground level trains and maybe a short line or two of El trains.
Chicago is unique in that it has a full metro system using the El. Probably about 90% or so of the Chicago train system is elevated. There are a couple of brief stretches that run underground and some ground level interstate lines that carry primarily freight and some commuter lines running out of the city.
Boston had a limited bit of El trains, but they shut down the last one in the late 1980s. So they are no longer in operation.
I think there was at least one crossover episode of St. Elsewhere and "Cheers" where some of the hospital staff were in the bar having drinks after work.

The Chicago (I think) El also featured in the film The Fugitive, where Harrison Ford's wrongly convicted surgeon confronted the actual murderer on the train. And The French Connection of course – was that Chicago too?

My favourite car chase under the El is Blue Brothers.

And The French Connection of course – was that Chicago too? Yes indeed re: the Fugitive. There is the scene where Harrison Ford calls the police and he is on the pay telephone at the El platform and they are able to figure out what stop it is because they hear the announcement in the background and also a horn from a water taxi on the Chicago River and between the two they can figure out which stop he was calling from.
French Connection was in New York.
Miranda yes the Blues Brothers! So many great one liners in that film.
When Elwood picks up Jake from the prison in Joliet...
Elwood: "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses."
Jake: "Hit it!"
At the country pub:
Elwood: "What kind of music do usually have here?"
Bar owner: "We gots both types of music. Country and western..."

The opening theme of St. Elsewhere. You can see some of the influence it would have on ER which made its debut some years later. The David Morse character very similar to Mark Green. The Mark Harmon character very similar to George Clooney. Denzel Washington similar to Peter Benton. The William Daniels character, the proud, cocky veteran surgeon was similar to Kerry Weaver and Robert Romano. When you see the opening credits for St. Elsewhere you can also see the similarity in style to "Hill Street Blues" as both series were from Mary Tyler Moore productions. I loved the bit at the end with the kitten in the surgical mask

Oh yes Mimsie the meowing kitten. The Mary Tyler Moore "MTM" version of the MGM Leo the roaring lion. They liked to change it up from time to time.
At the end credits of "Newhart" they had Bob Newhart - in his typical deadpan way - say "Meow"
And another where she burps
On the final episode of any MTM series they play Mary doing Porky Pig "That's all folks"

I loved the bit at the end with the kitten in the surgical mask[/quote] Hill Street Blues had the cat, Mimsie, with a police hat on. The end credits of St Elsewhere were horrible. They had Mimsie on a life support with machines beeping and then the beeps stop! I don't think it's used on repeated versions, probably because it's horrible...Ive added it below!

It's the little moments I love in ER. A team of netball players just came in with a teammate with possible meningitis. They walked down the corridor, flowing around a doctor who was about 5 ft tall. His expression was a mixture of fear and excitement! LOL!

I was downtown one day and several members of the Houston Rockets basketball team walked out of one of the Michigan Avenue hotels. They were in town to play the Bulls. I am 5' 9" so slightly above average height, but these fellas were at least 6' 7"-7 foot tall each. Standing next to them is pretty awe inspiring.
I cant imagine the daily challenges they must face. Sitting in cars, sitting in airplane seats when they travel on holiday they must have to upgrade to first class. (They fly on charter planes with all first class seats during the season). They must need no less than king size beds at home and in all hotel rooms. Forget trying to take a bath in a normal tub. Having to bend at the waist to get wet in the shower to wash their hair etc.

I'm 5'6 and once walked around a corner without watching where I was going and headbutted a guy in the diaphragm. Truly took his breath away!
