I grew up in the late 60s early 70s and loved the professional wrestling of that era. Yes they had the larger than life personas but they got on with the wrestling quickly. More importantly wrestling made up about 80% of the program.
The presentation style of modern professional wrestling doesn't appeal to me personally but I know it's as popular as ever so it appeals to many.
These days it seems to be more about the build up. They introduce the first wrestler. Then there is the walk up music. High fiving the crowd. The preening, the posturing, the boasting. The plugging of the next big pay per view event as they growl into the microphone.
Then they introduce the second wrestler. The walk up music. The high fiving the crowd. The preening. The posturing. The boasting. The plugging of the next pay per view event.
When they are both in the ring you have the stare down. Then the twist. Some third party shows up. Their walk up music. The preening. The posturing. High fiving the crowd. The plugging of the next pay per view event. They enter the ring. More stare downs.
Eventually they get on with a few minutes of wrestling. But all the song and dance build up seems to make up about 80% of the program.
I will say this. The wrestling is incredible. Their skill and athleticism is amazing. The men and the women both. Yes it's all choreographed but quite impressive.

There is atheletism and it is impressive. I never understood when people moaned about it being choreographed. Oh course it has to be, they're wrestling more than once a week, if they're injured that's it. "It's fake." Watch Mick Foley and Undertaker during the cage match. Foley is nuts!
I remember the 80s/90s era, probably when it became massive in the UK with Hogan, Macho Man, Undertaker, Shaun 'The Heartbreak Kid' Michaels, Rik Flair, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Jake The Snake Roberts, and of course The British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith.
I think there is too much storytelling now though, and variations, Raw and Smackdown.
