Friday (11th) at 9pm. (1/4)
The effects of the seasons on the wildlife in and around the Atlantic ocean. Starting with winter. David Suchet narrates. My kind of show. Love all wildlife programmes.

I'll be watching this latest in C5's 'A Year in the Wild' series.
I notice one of their earlier ones, 'Alaska: A Year in the Wild', is being repeated on 5SELECT - parts 1 & 2 tomorrow (Sat 5 Sept) at 7pm & 8pm, parts 3 & 4 same times the following Sat.

The Shetland Islands were one of the places visited. Fantastic photography. There really is a battle between life and death on the rugged coastline. With one seal pup swept out to sea by the ferocious waves. Red deer on the Island of Run supplement their diet with seaweed. Looking forward to next weeks episode.

I didn't know red deer ate seaweed - there's generally something new to me in these series. Also arctic foxes - I thought they were all white, didn't know about the ones in Iceland that are nearly black to be camouflaged on rocks instead of snow.

Another great episode. Didn't know adult male otters were called dog otters. Are adult females called bitches then? Loved the arctic fox cubs, and the eagles. Shows how magnificent Nature can be.

I otter know the answer to that - but I had to look it up. Apparently yes, bitches - but male otters are also called boars in which case the females are sows. I love arctic foxes - they're one of my favourite animals. Didn't know about female cuttlefish laying eggs once, and then dying pretty soon after. It's a good job they don't realise that, else they'd refuse to do it and the species would rapidly become extinct!
