I've just finished watching this series on DVD. "Natascha McElhone & Anna Chancellor star in this decadent mystery drama set on the sun-drenched Italian Riviera. A rich businessman's daughter sets up a luxury hotel in Italy amidst the roaring 1920s & the creeping rise of fascism.". BritBox:- www.britbox.co.uk/episode/Episode_1_61526I was hoping this might be a worthy successor to Downton Abbey, but was somewhat underwhelmed by the first episode - it didn't look or feel much like 1926 in which it's set, and was more or less a procession of characters being introduced to us and not doing very much. Also it was easy to get confused as some characters look very similar to each other. The only actors I recognised in the sizable cast were Anna Chancellor, playing an aristocrat, and Adam James, playing an American. It does get into its stride though by about episode 3 (of 6) by which time I was hooked despite the shades of Victorian melodrama which hang over it. It's sumptuously filmed (mainly in Croatia) in constant bright sunshine, and I suppose some will watch for that alone. They've thrown a lot into the mix - people damaged by WW1; various relationships, mostly troubled, & a couple of unrequited loves; monetary scams; blackmail & corruption; the advancement of Mussolini's fascists. The ending may have unsatisfactory aspects for some - but it's not the end, because series 2 has been filming since the summer and will be on at least BritBox next year.
