I went to see this because it had fantastic reviews and comes from the same group that produced Heathers which was a big West End success and has toured very successfully, and which I enjoyed. My trip got off to an exceptionally bad start as the buses were up the creek and I got drenched getting to the Tube. Then I couldn’t find the theatre!!!!! Eventually, totally soaked and with a painful knee, I found myself outside Hamilton (huge crowd queuing outside in the rain looking hacked off) so threw myself on the security detail’s mercy and got detailed instructions. Finally got there and collapsed in seat exhausted.
This show is based on the old Ryan Phillipe, Sarah Michelle Geller, Reese Witherspoon high school movie which I may have seen in the dim and distant but cannot recall at all, although I do remember the original film Dangerous Liaisons. I didn’t know anyone in the cast but the lead female, described in the reviews as the break out star, wasn’t on, BOO! She was replaced by an ensemble actress, but it turns out she used to play the lead in Heathers, so that seems a peculiar casting as she would surely expect more than ensemble. Maybe the break out star doesn’t do matinées. Apparently the girl playing one of the seduction targets is a TikTok sensation! She certainly gave it her all. The two leads playing 17 year olds both looked to be pushing 30 to me, whereas one of the girls being seduced looked well underage, so that was a bit icky. These 30year old teenagers are becoming quite the thing now! Shades of EastEnders!
I must say I wasn’t shocked but rather taken aback by how sexual this show was. Very raunchy dancing and lots of sexual references. I didn’t recognise all of the songs but the style was very much X Factor-bold. But the big numbers were to Torn and Colorblind. The singing and dancing was all very well executed, but it was bloody loud at times!
It had quite a mixed audience who went mad for it at the end, and they did deserve the applause they received. I thought it was pretty good fun really and if it tours, worth going if the prices are reasonable.
It was raining even harder when we left so I got soaked again, and this time the Tube was up the creek! Great!
