Date for Darby and Joan on Drama channel - Thu 11 Jan 2024 9.00 pm. Just watched tonight's episode. I didn't realise it's a serial but not really difficult to catch up, it's pretty slow! But the scenery is gorgeous and Bryan Brown gets better as he gets older.

The South Westerlies
This Acorn original has been on UKTV Play for a while, and I've watched & enjoyed it. Now Drama channel is going to broadcast it, with episode 1 (of 6) 8.00-9.10 pm this Saturday, 10 Feb.
A Norwegian energy company wants to build an offshore wind farm near a small West-of-Ireland coastal town. They send an undercover consultant (Orla Brady) to get the locals on side. She however has past connections to the area so has "history" with some of the locals she's supposed to be persuading. I'd describe it as gentle drama (well the action anyway; some of the language less gentle...) with some wry comedy.

Darby & Joan
I’ve got a bit confused. Who is her husband supposed to have killed? And why?

The South Westerlies.
I was a bit disappointed with this but not sure why. At least it wasn’t excessively Oirish! I just found it lacking something. I’ll persevere though. The son was very odd. The Norwegian boss said she needed the money to look after herself and her young kid. I assumed there were issues with him needing special schooling or medical treatment, and in the car he looked about 11. Then when they arrived it turned out he was 17, taller than Mum, cannot wait to get to London, presumably yewnie, and copping off with the surfer girl! I mean, how badly off could she be? Although the new job at HQ will be big money, she surely can’t be that poorly paid in her current role? She’s hardly having to scrape a living in the gig economy.

Whitstable Pearl
Formerly on Acorn TV, this now has a date for the Drama channel & UKTV Play:
"Coming soon
Whitstable Pearl
Drama • Crime
Kerry Godliman stars as Pearl Nolan, local private detective in the coastal town of Whitstable. When Pearl's friend dies suspisiciously, she finds herself in conflict with gruff new cop in town DCI Mike McGuire. From Thursday 14th March stream on UKTV Play or watch on the Drama channel at 9pm."
Don't know whether this is the first 2 seasons or just season 1. Meanwhile, season 3 has been confirmed for Acorn TV and starts production next month.

Marvellous news, I love these books. I’ve just found the Cornish cosy murder series by Fiona Leitch which is a bit similar.
I shall have trouble seeing Kerry as Pearl though because I have a fixed view of her from the book. Tall, willowy, olive skin, long black hair. So not a lot of similarities there, but I do like Kerry as an actress.

I’ve just seen a trailer and the detective is played by Porthos from The Musketeers. So they’ve changed his look too because in the books isn’t he described as being like a Viking?

The Marlow Murder Club - on Drama Wednesday 6th 8-10 and Thursday 7th March 8-10. I read the book quite recently and will be recording this for later. Just got the next book out of the library- Death Comes to Marlow. Could be quite a fun cosy drama series

I thoroughly enjoyed the two books. I have to say I didn’t visualise any of the characters as they have been cast and always thought Judith would be considerably older and less stylish than Samantha Bond.
Also on the subject of age, I think Orla Brady looks considerably older than Conor’s mother would be. Didn’t she have him at 18/20 and he is 18. So her maximum age is 38. Now Orla Brady is an extremely attractive woman, but her age is given online as 62!

Marlow Murder Club
I enjoyed this. It took its time to develop the relationships. If I were Bex, I would now be a former Vicar’s wife though. It is very beautifully filmed, even prettier than Midsomer some of which is also filmed in Buckinghamshire.

I really enjoyed The Marlow Murder Club. I haven’t read the books, but I believe there are three. I really hope the other two are adapted, with the same cast. Jo Martin, who played Suzy, said that if she was in charge she would definitely continue with this and film the other two. I was on the edge of my seat towards the end. It looked absolutely beautiful, too!
