I think I read that costs meant live overnight shows were being axed on 2 Drs. So it will be pre-recorded stuff or they will link up with an existing all night BBC station. Although I cannot think of one that plays music.....

I also read that it is a cost cutting exercise and that the night time schedule will consist of various music playlists.

I used to enjoy "The Organist Entertains" but it was shifted in the schedule a long way back and I keep forgetting that it goes out at 11pm on Thursday nights. I could listen on iPlayer but that is not the point. It is an awful shame that bilious programmes on Radio 4 like "The Now Show" and "The News Quiz" don't seem to be in danger of extinction.

There is news in next week's Radio Times . There has been a lot of reaction to the Sounds of the Sixties debacle. From March 4th , Tony Blackburn will be doing a live show of "Sounds of The Sixties" from 6am to 8am and then Dermot O'Leary is going to get the slot . His afternoon slot will be taken up by Zoe Ball and Anneka Rice will have the graveyard slot of Midnight on Fridays. I cannot think that I will be listening to Radio 2 much ,if hardly at all. It is becoming a soulless mire.

Brian Matthew will be hosting his last SOTS this coming Saturday where he presents a compilation of his favourite moments of the past 27 years.

I've now listened to the all new improved SOTS and that's me done.No information on the artist or records,Blackburn talking over beginning and ends of records jokes that were not funny first time around, people tweeting what a great show it is.What a sad end to what was R2s best show.

Very sad news,a great loss to broadcasting. So knowledgeable with stories behind the artists and where the programmes he presented were not about him.One of the last of the greats of radio.

This was previous. Brian is critically ill but not dead. A dreadful blunder.

I was going to correct this last night but figured that since he is very ill, it might be a 'previous' to do so.
My thoughts are with his family at this time - and what a fabulous gift of music appreciation he gave to millions.

Just read the sad news. He was one of the best presenters BBC radio ever had, imo. He will be sadly missed.

Thanks for flagging that up MitM. Brian received some truly wonderful obits in the papers. He was much loved in broadcasting circles by colleagues and by the bands and musicians he got to know.
Pity the BBC were unable to appreciate him latterly.
