I am very sorry to read that Brian Matthew has been axed from his R2 show Sounds Of The 60s.I knew he had been ill but this was due to a fall and he was ready to return but the production company that makes the programme for the BBC has decided to go with a new presenter. How shabby to treat a well respected and knowledgeable presenter in this way.

I agree that Brian Matthew has been treated in a very shabby way by the BBC. Ageism rears it's ugly head again, and I'm totally sick of it!

Veteran BBC Radio 2 broadcaster Brian Matthew has stepped down from presenting Sounds of The 60s due to "poor health" at the age of 88. The station said it was the "right time" for Matthew to retire after an "extended bout of ill health". Up until last November, he had presented the Saturday morning show for more than 26 years. Station manager Lewis Carnie said: "Brian is an outstanding presenter and... a radio legend." Matthew's replacement has not been officially announced, although Sir Tim Rice has been standing in for him. In a statement, BBC Radio said it planned to run a series of special programmes with Matthew, but confirmed a new voice would take over his Sounds of the 60s role. Mr Carnie, said: "He has made the programme his own with his natural ability, passion and warmth and we are incredibly grateful for everything he has done for Sounds of the 60s. "We're very sorry that Brian is unable to continue presenting every week, but hope to welcome him back to Radio 2 very soon."

... Or The BBC said in a statement that, due to Matthew’s ill health, it had been mutually agreed that it was “the right time for him to step off the weekly treadmill of presenting the show”. But Matthew said: “ That’s absolute balderdash. I was ready and willing and able to go back, and they’ve just said they are going to put the programme in the hands of other people. “I didn’t really have much in the way of ill health. I had a collapse at home at the bottom of our stairs, and my wife called the ambulance service. They came and examined me and said it was a matter for appraisal at the hospital. They put me on a ward, I stayed there for a while and now I’m back at home. “I enjoyed doing the show very much indeed. I did it for 25 years. I feel very disconcerted, I must say. I do admit I’m a bit of an antique, but that’s never seemed to matter until now.” www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/01/27/radio-2-takes-horrible-decision-replace-britains-oldest-dj-brian/

Part of the problem is that the Sounds of the 60s is made for the BBC by Unique, part of the 7 Digital Group. Their original announcement was that it was a decision, not between the BBC and Brian Matthew, but between Unique and Brian Matthew. They then said that they hoped that he would be returning for a series of specials. Unique/7 Digital, themselves are saying nothing. There is no mention of anything here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006wqlvBut, there is a lot of archive material.

He is 88 for god's sake,is that ageism or someone who should have packed it in 20 years ago? Not exactly taxing picking and playing records bur even so. Time to relax surely.

Some people love what they do regardless of their age. Why should he retire if he still enjoys his job?
I remember Saturday Club which Brian hosted in the 60s. I also caught some of his Sounds of the 60s when travelling in the car. Always a good mix of music and anecdotes.
It's a bit like when Mike Harding was kicked off the Folk Show. Mark Radcliffe is OK but I still miss Mike who was a proper folk musician.

I've always enjoyed Sounds of the 60s but have to be honest - at 88 Brian should be retired. Yes, the BBC have treated him shamefully - but can you imagine any female broadcaster being allowed on air in her 70s let alone 80s?
Presumably when Brian began this show someone else had to 'move aside' to give him the 8-10 slot. No doubt that broadcaster had fans too.
He has been an incredible broadcaster for years, but I think its time to give someone else a shot.

I agree, he has had a long career, been enjoyed by millions, but all good things have to come to an end, and I think it is time for a change. For myself I am looking forward to Tony Blackburn, who will be in the new 60s slot from 6-8. So it will be like going back to my teenage years, waking up to Tony!
I wish Brian all the best in his retirement, and it isn't the last we hear of him and I believe he is doing some specials.

As if losing Brian Matthew wasn't enough now I find that SOTS is being moved to an earlier slot and the 8 -10 slot now taken over by Dermot O'Leary who I cannot abide. It feels as if I am losing a friend, someone with great knowledge and who worked with many acts that he plays.

I was unaware until last week that Janice Long and Alex Lester had been removed from the Radio 2 Night time schedules. Along with Brian Matthew, two more veteran and popular radio presenters have been chucked out of their niches. I wonder why? Perhaps we will soon find out. Radio 2 will go the way of other popular stations .
