I'm not much of a Murray fan in general, but he really deserves this. He has spent his whole career battling against 3 of the best players there has ever been ... and he has made it to the top. That is an incredible achievement. When you think what a scrawny teen he was, forever getting cramp (and sooooo bolshie with it!), you can see how far he has come. That takes intense work and character grit to do.

And how great, at the same time, to have his brother world number one at doubles as well. I bet that won't be replicated by anyone else anytime soon.

An incredible achievement by both of them.
Andy has also won the Paris Masters. 6-4 in the third against John Isner.

A bit confused as to how he is No1 is it because he has improved so much or because of the decline of his opponents. Still a great achievment? depends on how long he stays at No1.

Both! He has had a great yr and Djokovic's form has dropped off. The pair are so far ahead of the rest of the field in terms of ranking points that no one else is in the picture for the top slot. Djokovic has a lot of points to defend, especially in the first 6 mths of 2017, so with luck, Murray should keep the No.1 spot for a while.
He has a tough draw for the yr end finals next week, mind. Wawrinka, Nishikori and Cilic are all in his group. Djokovic has Thiem, Monfils and Raonic. Whatever happens though Murray will end the yr as No.1.

I think he counts as a "true great" already. Very few players manage all 4 slams. Maybe they are the "truly greats". Personally, I can't see him ever winning the French, but he pretty much fulfilled his remit by winning Wimbledon and a gold Olympic medal (twice each, in fact) and now he has also nabbed the No.1-in-the-world crown, he is far and away the best player we've ever had or, indeed, are ever likely to have.

Well true, but I'm not sure you can compare the demands of the game in the 1930s to now. Then you needed talent, of course. Now you also need supreme mental and physical fitness, excellent PR/media skills, willingness to have your blood tested at any time of the day or night if someone turns up to do so, the ability to withstand jet-lag and altitude/climate changes on an almost weekly basis, etc, etc, whilst also being sure to always mind your Ps and Qs on social media. It's not just about elegantly swotting a ball across a net any more.

He's got a bit of dilemma for the England v Scotland footie match. Both FAs have invited him to attend.
As far as I'm concerned, he's Scottish and should be able to support his team without recriminations from English fans. I certainly won't hold it against him.

A real humdinger of a first rubber in the Fed Cup final between France and the Czech Republic. Currently 14 games to 13 in the final set with the Czech Republic in front. It really is a close run thing.
