Episode 1 of series 2 is now available, and it's started well.
James Purefoy is Hap, Michael Kenneth Williams (Chalky White in 'Boardwalk Empire') is Leonard in this period piece, set in late-1980s Texas. I started to watch series 1 because Christina Hendricks (not in series 2) and Michael Kenneth Williams were in the cast, and got hooked. Series 1 was a crime thriller, series 2 looks a bit different and more of a murder (possibly, but certainly a death that needed covering up) mystery. This is a new story, so it isn't necessary to watch the first series for plot purposes, but perhaps it is to understand the relationship between the two leads.

Just me who likes this then?
Series 3 is under way now and it's as good as ever. Hap Collins (white & straight, laconic) and Leonard Pine (black & gay, with anger issues) were childhood friends who grew up together in East Texas. They behave a bit like an old married couple, often bickering but supporting each other without hesitation when the chips are down. It's difficult to pigeonhole - "dark historical comedy drama" is the nearest I can get. The latest Radio Times flags it in their "Discover TV" pages on streamed programmes, and describes it as "... part buddy comedy, part crime drama and part Southern noir".
As with series 2 this is a new adventure, but there are one or two characters from the previous one and it might help to have watched that.

Watched the first episode and decided that it is not for me; not what I was expecting.

I watched the whole of series 1 yesterday. After the first episode I was like "I'm not sure", but from experience with other shows I always try to watch more than one, the first tends to be establishing the characters and story etc. But I really enjoyed it. I liked James Purefoy in The following and Michael Kenneth Williams in The Wire, so I knew of them. I'm on the 2nd episode of Series 2 now. Haps just walked in to the church "Hallelujah y'all" 😄

I enjoyed series 2 even more than series 1. It was a lot darker but the way it jumps back into the past to establish the story makes it so intriguing, you can't wait for the next episode to find out what's happening. The 6 episodes work really well. The story plays out lovely, the 6 episodes keeps it tight and you don't end up with a load of filler. I'm now on to series 3. I want to know why Hap and Leonard have been in a fight. It looks like their friendship could be over...although I doubt it if there's to be a series 4! Great series.☺
