Favourite music from films?
John Williams has basically scored my entire life. How can one man create such epicness? Superman, Star Wars, ET, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones ...
Special shout out to the Awesome Mix from Guardians of the Galaxy, which I can't stop listening to.
And my favourite Disney soundtrack has to be The Lion King.

I have three favourite modern composers of soundtrack music. One has been mentioned above, the other two are Joe Hisaishi who is the composer of some of the most important music for film in the history of cinema, and Howard Shore.
However, if we go back in time, there are many gems, too many to mention from the likes of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Bernard Herrmann, Ron Goodwin, John Barry, and so on, and so on; I am just a fan of proper cinema soundtrack music -- NOT the insufferable background garbage, of which I will speak no more.
And, you have the music from the great Hollywood musicals, from Rogers and Hammerstein, all the way through to Leonard Bernstein, and beyond. The list is too long.

Another vote here for John Barry. Also Jerry Goldsmith for Alien, Vangelis for Blade Runner, and Ennio Morriconi. Am sure can think of more. I also like Midnight a Cowboy and Dances With Wolves.

John Barry is my favourite, he seemed to have a knack of capturing the mood of a film perfectly. Out of Africa is a good example of this.
Other half likes Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Da Vinci code, etc)

Have to mention that I love musicals, so of course my list of them is far too big to be shown here.
So many wonderful new ones now, with the input of the incredible Andrew Lloyd Webber and also others such as Les Mis.

I don't want to start a new thread so I thought I'd post hear as it's a musical. I've just read that they're remaking Little Shop Of Horrors. Why? Why can't they adapt a musical that's not been adapted before or come up with a new idea. They say Taron Egerton is up for the Seymour role, which does sound good, but I could happily sit here and watch the 80s version and it's fine. Is Chris Evans going to be better than Steve Martin? Why do they have to keep messing. I read a while back that they were going to remake Clue, now that would be sacrilege!

I have to agree with you professor.
The TV networks here in the states will often broadcast "live" versions of new stage productions of beloved musicals (Grease, Hairspray, Sound of Music, West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar) and those are fine. Its just a revival stage production, which happens all the time, and adding in the "live" element makes it seem like you are in the theatre. The casting sometimes hit or miss. Carrie Underwood as Maria in Sound of Music, the singing parts were divine, the acting not so much. But John Legend was an inspired choice for Jesus in JCSS
But when they remake feature films of musicals I don't get the point (aside from $). The films themselves - by their very nature of multiple takes, location filming, editing, dubbed singing, take away from the stage experience to begin with.
A remake of a film of a musical is basically a remake of a remake (like they just did with Cats) and there is no real point to it when local touring companies - even high schools - are doing fine live versions as we speak.
Go support your local theatre and force the major studios to stick with films that are films.
