Anyone else here a fan of 1980s/90s children's fantasy game show Knightmare? The premise was that a competitor (or 'dungeoneer') passed through various rooms of the dungeons of Knightmare Castle on a quest, facing various challenges along the way, helped or hindered by assorted characters, collecting objects and spells which may or may not be useful, and so on The dungeoneer was unable to see (having to wear the 'Helmet of Justice' - justice, of course, being blind) so had to be audibly guided by his or her team-mates. Mistakes usually ended in death. It was notable for its innovative use of chroma-key to create virtual sets.
For me this was very much a "not to be missed" show. A highlight was always the commentary of the sardonic Dungeon Master Treguard (gleefully proclaiming, "Ooo, nasty!" whenever a dungeoneer met their - usually gruesome - demise). It was a fabulous, imaginative show - something, I think, which could be ripe for a return with the benefits of modern CGI. In any case, a while ago one of the Challenge repeated the first (and possibly second) series: I wish they'd show the rest!

I remember that! Loved it. Wasn't Patrick Moore the Dungeon Master? Appeared as a disembodied head?

I used to watch this when my eldest son discovered it and I was as drawn into it as much as he was. I loved it. I'm sure there must be some way they could re-do it with up to date technology.

Ah! I'm thinking of the wrong game then! Sounds like it; I don't think Hugo Myatt could ever been confused with Patrick Moore! The only time Treguard appeared as a disembodied head, to the best of my knowledge, was in Knightmare VR, a (mercifully never made) update in which he, and pretty much everything else, was computer generated (the pilot can be found on YouTube, along with numerous clips of the 'proper' Knightmare). I always liked the Wall Monsters and their riddles, too - particularly Granitas ("MY NAME IS NOT AMUSING!!!" ).

It was essential viewing for my children. I remember the Brollachan (Feed me knowledge, or I will feed on you). Also dragon-riding, long before Game of Thrones.
We even had a board game based on it, which was quite good except it went on too long - took ages to get from level 1 to level 2, by which time we were fed up with playing it.

Ah, I'd seen the board game on Amazon and wondered about getting it. Maybe not, from your description. I've got a couple of the game books (Knightmare and The Labyrinths of Fear) which are half-and-half novel and game, with the story containing clues which will help you in your own quest. The stories are decent reads and the first is interesting in that it fills out some of the backstory about how Treguard came to Knightmare Castle and the original purpose of the quests. The quest is fairly easy in the first, but the second one is a (no pun intended!) nightmare! I keep dying!

*de-lurks* Huge Knightmare fan here! All the series are good, but I especially enjoy the later ones with Lord Fear and his henchmen. It's a shame Challenge haven't repeated those recently (they only have the rights to the first four series). You might like to check these out if you haven't seen them already: David Rowe's 'Art of Knightmare' book and other merchandise - www.davidrowe.net/shop.html2013 special episode for YouTube Geek Week -

Thanks - I've seen the special, but I hadn't heard of the book before!
