I watched the first episode of this 3-parter yesterday, mainly because my brother visited the country earlier this year, and was thoroughly fascinated. Science journalist Gaia Vince takes her husband and two small children there for a few months on what looks like a perfect assignment.
Costa Rica is a small country, but contains 5% of all the known species in the world, and a small part of it - the Osa peninsula, 20 miles across - contains 3% of all species. It has disbanded its armed forces, has designated more than 25% of the country as national parks and aims to be the world's first carbon neutral country by 2021.
There's lots of wonderful scenery and wildlife, including some cute baby sloths being treated for injuries received from power lines (the programme wrongly described them as being electrocuted - that word means killed, not just injured). The episode is repeated tomorrow (Tues. 2 May) on 4seven at 7.00 pm.

Ah! The title makes it sound like an exotic version of Escape to the Country.

No, nothing to do with buying property!
The country is encouraging high-end eco-tourism - keep the number of visitors low (so as not to overly disturb the wildlife), but have them pay a lot of money each. There's a very posh "tree house" in the programme, high up in a cloud forest, which costs $400 a night.

Sounds a good idea to me! One way to make eco-tourism work.
