This is the NT's current big production number starring Imelda Staunton who blew everyone else off the stage in Gypsy. So the theatre group went today and it got rapturous applause and cheers from many in the audience. I am not a particular fan of Sondheim (a bit relentlessly minor key imo) but thought it would be worth a go. Imelda was not the big stand out here that she was in Gypsy, if anything she came second to Janie Dee who was terrific as Phyllis. And of course there was a Strallen sister! This time it was Zizi as Young Phyllis for whom she was an excellent match. I checked her voice for vibrato and it was nothing like her sister in the Oklahoma prom, LOL...... actuallyI think I preferred that show.....
Not everyone enjoyed it. The lady next to me said she reckoned it was sung straight through because, had there been an interval, half the audience wouldn't have returned! But I think that was a VERY minority view and overall it got a really good reception. But a safe bet for Sondheim fans only I think.
