Another of the Chinese films that I like is the multi-Oscar wining Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Just finished watching them, I really enjoyed them. Now I am scouring the bargain basement for some more.

I loved Downfall, and a film on Sophie Scholl called The Final Days. I knew nothing about her or The White Rose resistance until I saw the DVD extras on Downfall and she was mentioned along with the film. A big favourite of mine was The Lives of Others. I do love a foreign film! One is airing tomorrow on BBC4 called The Hijacking starring Kaspar from Borgen. Recorder is set. One film that really upset me was The Stoning of Soraya M. It made me so angry, what happened to that poor woman and had a very graphic end. A superb film.

I love Betty Blue, as has already been mentioned; also Jean de Florettes and Manon des Sources (both expensive to buy, am still looking for the Blu-Rays). Also there was a noodle film called Tampopo years ago that sticks in the mind. There are some very dark Asian horror films out there, Audition is very grim. Also the original version of The Eye, is superior to the remake. Am sure there's lots more films, from all over. Two more of my favourite foreign films. As is Cinema Paradiso....my avatar is a still from that.

Two foreign films I would recommend are the Hungarian film 'Fateless' and the Norwegian film ' The Bothersome Man'

I haven't seen that one. Is it the same director?

Akira Kurosawa directed, a much older film than crouching tiger etc. A real epic, cast of thousands.
I really enjoy this genre. Chinese ghost story is another.

Nikita - the original French film is very powerful, not least because of the fantastic chemistry between Anne Parillaud and Tchéky Karyo. She scrubs up really well as the trainee assassin and the moment when he gives her her first assignment is loaded with unstated longing on both sides. And the French pronunciation of his name, Bob, is charming!

That is much better than the Hollywood remake. Mainly because of the actors, as you say.
