People seem to have liked a lot of the foreign television series shown recently on British TV, the ones from Scandinavia, France, Belgium and the likes.
I think it was with Das Boot that I realized that films that I watched didn't have to be in English. Now I watch quite a few, including the likes of Amelie, The Seventh Seal, Solaris, Repentance, Ran and many others. In terms of animated films, of course we have all the Studio Ghibli films.
Are there any that you liked and would recommend to others?

"Downfall". Never stops being a great watch. "La Guerre des boutons", 1962, is always a joy to watch as is the 1994 remake, as "War of the Buttons", set in Ireland (with screenplay by Colin Welland), but not the 2011, French remake.

I loved Downfall, and a film on Sophie Scholl called The Final Days. I knew nothing about her or The White Rose resistance until I saw the DVD extras on Downfall and she was mentioned along with the film.
A big favourite of mine was The Lives of Others. I do love a foreign film! One is airing tomorrow on BBC4 called The Hijacking starring Kaspar from Borgen. Recorder is set.
One film that really upset me was The Stoning of Soraya M. It made me so angry, what happened to that poor woman and had a very graphic end.

He got rid of a wife who was an impediment to marriage to a 14 year old girl, only to NOT get the girl he wanted. It is a film that has been criticised for being heavy handed. Sorry, no hand is too heavy for the truth that is portrayed here. What happened was vile, and needed to be screamed from the house tops.

I love Betty Blue, as has already been mentioned; also Jean de Florettes and Manon des Sources (both expensive to buy, am still looking for the Blu-Rays). Also there was a noodle film called Tampopo years ago that sticks in the mind.
There are some very dark Asian horror films out there, Audition is very grim. Also the original version of The Eye, is superior to the remake. Am sure there's lots more films, from all over.

Oh yes, Tampopo! Brilliant film. Very very funny in a lot of places. The film was made by a husband and wife team who made a lot of films together, he would direct, and she would star.
