Channel 4’s new comedy series Derry Girls will premiere on Thursday January 4th at 10pm.
Derry Girls explores the lives of ordinary people living under the spectre of the Troubles, all seen through the eyes of a local teenager.
Armed police in armoured Land Rovers, British Army check points and “peace” walls are all an everyday reality for 16-year old Erin and her friends. But, despite all that, Erin has other things to worry about, like the fact the boy she’s in love with, doesn’t know she exists.
The series stars Saoirse Monica Jackson, Tara Lynne O’Neill, Tommy Tiernan, Ian McElhinney, Siobhan McSweeney, Louisa Harland, Kathy Kiera Clarke, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Dylan Llewellyn.

I enjoyed the first episode (apart perhaps from the language! - maybe that's what brought on the demise of the elderly nun taking the detention class...). It was quite clever in setting up some really funny lines. I think my favourite was when the poor lad from England who had been pleading all day was finally forced to use the waste bin, his cousin came out with "That's the English for you - f***ing savages!".

Yes, I wasn't too sure what expect with this, but rather enjoyed it. And yes, the lad who needed a wee was very funny - although the serious side of me thought it would actually be outrageous for a lad not to be allowed to use the loo all day.

I'm watching it now and it's taken a few minutes to get tuned in to the accents. But it is funny.

We laughed out loud nearly all the way through this programme, had to put the subtitles on though because of the strong accents, looking forward to the next one! Must admit I have the subtitles on most of the time anyway!

It's really funny, but I do need the subtitles on - though even the subtitlers were getting things wrong, e.g. "my bit (on the TV)" was shown as "my bet".
I found the boring uncle recounting how he was held up & chained to his radiator etc.highly amusing - he kept digressing to insert irrelevant details while the impatient family were trying to move the story along.

I'm alright with the accents as I have family from Monaghan which is similar. It took a few minutes to tune in the first time but I've got it now.

And I think everyone has a boring uncle in the family so I really related to that.

Another good one this week, I thought. The weaving together of several apparently unconnected strands was cleverly done.

You will go far in life, Jenny. But you will not be well-liked.
