Is anyone a member of a reading group or book club? If so , how does it work or operate?
i belong to a reading group run by my local library, we meet once a month at the library . We all read the same book provided by the library, and then discuss it the following month. We tend to talk about the book for about ten minutes and then put the world to rights for the rest of the time, along with coffee and biccies!
How are others run?

I used to be a member of a book club run by our local Waterstones (other bookshops are available).... we would usually be offered a choice of two books for the following month's discussion, but sometimes we were just told what to read
The young man in charge would have a list of questions which he'd ask if the discussion flagged, but it often didn't... first one inevitably was a who liked, didn't like, was indifferent to the book
His favourite genre was sci-fi (definitely not mine!) and we had a run of books I couldn't take to, but it was interesting to hear what others thought, even if I hadn't read whatever it was
He has moved on and I believe staff members are now taking turns, but I haven't been to any meetings for a while
They were/are about an hour long, biscuits and water provided

I've been in three groups. One was Penguin books only; I hadn't realised just how many boring books Penguin published. The second group read quite good books but always met in noisy pubs, so I gave that up. The third group was great; nice folk and I discovered some fabulous books I would never have picked left to my own devices.
But for some reason it just fizzled out. I haven't tried to find another one.
My mother has a group of friends who meet at each others' houses throughout the winter. To be honest, it seems like they spend about ten minutes discussing whatever book it was, and the rest of the time chatting about other things and eating lunch!

I think that's pretty much how they all work. Social groups of friends who meet for a coffee and a chat, which may or may not be about a book or books.

I've just stopped going to the Book Club at our library. I joined to read new authors, but to say the welcome was tepid is a gross understatement! It was a longstanding clique, and new members were not required. I am however a member of one on Facebook. One member suggests a book to read each month. Can be problematic, as some are in the US and the books can be hard to source, but I have been introduced to genres I would never have thought of reading, and greatly enjoy.
